Souls and items do not have genders.  The SL character has non-binary identity. Why not? Social gender-oriented roles - what do they mean in the modern society, if you're able to take any of them? What if only in a virtual world you can be yourself_not_a_mask which the society wants from you? By the way, this is one of reasons why I love SecondLife. But it is another story.
