    “𝓘f Carlisle is not here then I might as well just leave,” Alistair commented as he looked around the home from where he stood. He seemed like he had terrible timing for stopping by when Carlisle wasn’t home, most often than not running into other family members that lived with Carlisle. Taking a few steps towards the front door and away from the woman he didn't bother to look back over his shoulder. “Let him know that I will be back in a decade or two.”

   He hadn’t pegged butterflies under the category of ‘animals not afraid of vampires.’  But the way the monarch insect landed fearlessly on Alice’s hair had him putting them on that list.  It was oddly peaceful.  The slow moving wings like her blinks, not wanting to scare off the delicate creature.  Sunlight dappled her face, scattering glitter around the clearing.  Jasper laid nearby motionless.  She was calm and he drew on that to resist the instinct that said laying down was dangerous.  That looking only at her was dangerous.  But he didn’t move until the butterfly flew off and Alice’s laugh made him stay on the grass with her.

“i’m fine, it’s just a flesh wound, i’ll be okay.”

“Uh-”  He doesn’t consider bleeding ‘just a flesh wound.’  Not that he knew her very well.  Jasper had only seen her around the small town, knew she taught something or other at the high school.  Even Charlotte is nosing her hand, the dog clearly concerned about the woman.  He sets the lab in a sit stay to keep her from getting in the way so he can take a look.  “I’m no doctor, but that might need stitches.  What the hell did you do?”  It looks like she sliced her hand open.

“it’s okay to hurt & breakdown. you don’t have to be strong all the time.”

Jasper gapes at her, blinking rapidly despite having no need to.  Eyes are dark and glaring ringed by purple from thirst.  Wants to snarl at her.  Settles for baring his teeth instead.  Shoulders are squared, but gradually slumping.  Esme doesn’t deserve his anger.  It’s not her he’s mad at.  It’s himself.  And anger is better than depression.  “No, it’s not okay.”  Has to reel in his emotions to prevent them from bleeding out to her.  He’s pacing now, low growls leaving his throat.  “This is the opposite of okay.”  Vampires can’t cry and he hasn’t gotten close in decades.  Except the woman standing in front of him makes him want to drape himself over her.  Let her take some of the weight that’s been bearing down on him for years.  “I’m not...used to this being an option.”
