Hi and appologies if this came through more than once but had to respond 100% agreement on your comment in tags on the scary media poll. I read the Velvet ribbon in a book called the haunted house scary poems and tales 1970 scholastic when I was 8 and 50 years later it still haunts me once in a while. Very low key but creeoy as all hell. Glad Im not the only one!! :D
It really terrified me. I remember having nightmares about it for years. The thing that bothered me most was that the entire class laughed. I couldn't understand why they were laughing at something so creepy. Sure, we were in first grade, but how is someone's head falling off funny?
I had a whole long list of phobias and fears throughout my life, and horror movies were one of them. My mom is the biggest baby on the planet and I think I copied a lot of the things she was afraid of (she was scared of big dogs, so was I). Only later in life did I realize that I actually reaaaally love horror. I credit Supernatural with helping me get over that fear. I was afraid to even see trailers for horror movies when I went to the theater before I got into SPN and then suddenly I realized I wasn't scared.
Now I absolutely love horror movies. There was a time when my brother, my stepdad and I would have horror movie nights and I kid you not we watched almost everything on Netflix.
I'm really not afraid of much anymore. Just some jumpscares will get me. But that book? That totally wasn't appropriate for a child. I don't know why you'd wanna expose your children to really creepy things like that but whatever...
Thanks for writing! I'm glad I'm not the only one who that book effected! It's weird to think it stuck with us even all these years later XDD
