CALL TO ARTISTS

Photography & Collage Virtual Artist Residency

Final Deadline to Apply: Tuesday, 19 August 2025. The Photography & Collage Virtual Artist Residency will invite photographers and collage artists to come together in dialogue, learn from one another, and make artwork for a series of exhibitions that explore the intersection of collage and photography. Unfolding in two tracks over the course of a month, we will ask, What happens when a collagist picks up the camera? What happens when a photographer collages their pictures? Presentations will explore collage in theory, artist practice, the ecosystem of art, the state of photography, and the history of photography and collage. Artists will shoot with their own camera, in whatever process they choose (film & develop or digital & print), and then make collage with the photographs they take.

Since 2018, in Warsaw, Poland, Anna Klos has taken her concept of an organic collage community and grown it into Retroavangarda, one of the premier collage exhibition events in the world. COLLAGE ON VIEW

the cut, the tear & the remix

Online only at McMaster Museum of Art in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada through 22 July 2021. “the cut, the tear, & the remix: contemporary collage and Black futures” is curated by Hamilton visual artist and art educator stylo starr and features the work of Emkay Adjei-Manu, Anna Binta Diallo, FEZA, Kofi Oduro, Sonya Mwambu, SPATIAL-ESK, Ghislan Timm, and Yung Yemi. The artists are all deeply engaged in unearthing a future rooted in their individual ancestral connections to the African and Caribbean diaspora through varied interpretations of collage and present their work using “cut & paste” techniques—both analogue and digital—that go beyond traditional tactile paper and photomontage iterations of the medium to include new media such as video, digital art and design.
