These two songs were three years apart in life, and I think that is very indicative of how life actually is. Growth can be interesting in anyone’s life, but especially when it is documented in such a way. Life now tends to document everything even if/when you aren’t on social media alot you probably are on someone else’s. That can make your mistakes or mishaps so evident and cause you to carry them so in a negative way when really they are just leading to some great revelation in your life. Growing up can be a long and arduous process and I feel like these two songs really demonstrate that together. Happy 3rd birthday to Collapsible Lung!

I’ve never understood why so many people think Collapsible Lung was such a terrible album?? I mean, sure, it wasn’t their best work but it wasn’t that bad. In fact, for a pop album it was pretty damn good. And it had a good concept and told a sweet story and had catchy songs and lyrics. I thought it was cool that they played with some new genres and styles, and I thought it fit the story they were trying to tell really well. Why is it such an underrated and disliked album?

Collapsible Lung gives me mixed feelings, but I’m okay with those feelings.

No doubt, Collapsible Lung was not Relient K’s best album. Everything we had come to love about them (their wit, emotion, honesty) was put away and replaced with seemingly shallow pop songs. But, even so, I have come to appreciate the album for what it is. The first song and the last one are my favorites. Something about them sounds like the Relient K we were familiar with. In further research I learned that these two were the ones that Thiessen and Hoopes wrote without the help of others (source???). In knowing that, I can see the album as a metaphor for so many things. It can be about getting lost in worldly things and finding your need for God. It can be about falling into the trap of trying to please others and realizing the dangers of doing so. While Relient K may or may not have intended for us to get these things out of the album, I think it’s beautiful that even in something so vastly different it is possible to see light.
