Travel Channel stacks up to travel writing standards

In this post, I will be reviewing the Travel Channel website and how the success of the website ranks among other websites designated in the “journalistic travel” category. This post will highlight:

What category the Travel Channel’s website is in.

What criteria make that category.

How the website fares against the established criteria.

How the website fares overall.

This is an updated version of the original document posted in January.

When people think “traveling,” they usually think about the major websites for travel deals like Travelocity and Kayak and not journalistic travel websites like National Geographic. One website they fail to immediately think of is the Travel Channel’s website. Travel Channel is a channel on most cable packages that allows viewers to see what destinations are out there and what they look like. Their website, however, has a different purpose. Their website serves as a means of providing additional information but also showcasing travel writers. Categorically speaking, this website is a journalistic travel website, much like National Geographic. There are several things that allow such a site to fall into the category, but the three main things are showcasing travel writers’ work, providing additional information on destinations, and provide viewers with photographs and videos of destinations.

Showcasing travel writing works

Showcasing travel writers’ work is the first criterion to look at when reviewing the Travel Channel’s website. Upon the landing page of the website, several tabs are available. The first three are about the shows on the television channel itself. The middle two, Destinations and Interests, are the tabs that showcase the talent of travel writers. If you scroll over the Destinations tab, three featured articles pop up along with a list to the side of popular destinations that have been visited and written about. The same can be said for the Interests tab, but their list consists of destinations by category such as beaches, family, airports, and top hotels. The navigation is clean, and the writing is up to par with that of other Associated Press writers. The only complaint with the website is that they don’t have a link to view profiles of their writers or to view other writing by the authors other than giving that information on the bottom of the articles. Overall, however, Travel Channel gets an A in this category.

    Providing additional destination information

Another criterion to judge the Travel Channel on is providing additional information on their destinations observed in their shows. This is where the website falls lax a little bit. The Shows tab showcases what shows are available on their channel as well as what each show is about. Additional information, however, is sparse. Instead, video clips and photographs take the place of writing. The only writing that can be seen as supplements to the shows are biographies of the hosts, additional books to purchase, and what the show is ultimately about. The additional writing could be in the Destinations or Interests tabs, but it would be better navigation and possibly get more views to include supplemental writing with the shows. The Travel Channel fails in this category.

Providing forms of media to please the audience

The final criterion the Travel Channel is judged by is providing photographs and videos of destinations for viewers to consume. Today's society is more visual-based than anything, and having photographs and other forms of media are key. Each separate show has its own photographs on the Travel Channel website as well as video clips from those shows. Full episodes are available as well. Featured articles have a few slideshows here and there or additional photos, but other articles only provide the viewers with one or two photographs. As an overall grade on the category, Travel Channel gets a C because of their strengths and where they lack.

In conclusion, Travel Channel’s website meets all the criteria for a travel writing website. Not only is it simple to navigate and pleasing to the eye while not being overbearing, it has all of the qualities that make it a decent journalistic travel website. Their website showcases travel writers’ works that are not included on the television channel. They have photos and videos included on their website of shows and their destinations, making it appealing for those who land on their webpage. The only major thing the website could improve on would be to add more bulk information about destinations on the site. Adding more photographs and other forms of media will draw in a bigger audience. In addition, having the author’s profile off to the side that leads to a larger section where people can link to other contributors on the site. Travel writing on a website maybe have been strictly set to National Geographic, but the Travel Channel is in the running as well with a satisfactory rating.
