Experiments progress at a slow pace without the proper test subject. And an experiment minus a test subject does not always provide accurate results. Research without accuracy amounts to nothing but wasted time. 

But some tests were too dangerous to perform independently, so that was when hiring test subjects was necessary, or calling in favors.
