Placemats nearing completion.
After weaving the 6 rainbow placemats, hemstitching, knotting and trimming the fringe on 12 sides, I am finally able to move to the final phases.
It is amazing what putting the items in water does to the yarn of the items. It relaxes the yarn, opens it up and lets the woven threads become one piece of fabric.
The above pics display the placemats after trimming the fringe to the desired length and then soaking in cold water and vinegar (to ensure colors don't run) as the first part of wet finishing. After soaking in cold water, they will be washed with a special soap to further soften and condition the fibers further.
The transformation is amazing and I wouldn’t have believed it until I experienced it myself when I was first learning how to weave.
Once these are dry, they will have the threads that are hanging from the color changes clipped, pressed with a steam iron and then they will be done!
I cannot wait. These have been a lot of work, but a good learning process too for making multiple small items on a loom.
