Snowmine - Laminate Pet Animal (2012) on Snowmine
Gene Priest
As a musician, both solo and with a number of bands, I get the pleasure of discovering new music on a regular basis. This is one huge perk to any musician or music lover in general. You become immersed in the world of music and whether on tour or playing in your own hometown it is sometimes far too easy to get overloaded with new sounds and new bands. Luckily for me an unassuming Tuesday night show in March introduced me to one of the best bands I have heard and seen in quite some time. It is not very often that the moment a band hits the last note I immediately feel the need to gravitate towards the merch table, if that were the case I would be beyond broke and that is pretty obvious. Snowmine had that effect on me in a major way, so I picked up a copy of Laminate Pet Animal on vinyl in which I went straight home and played.
Snowmine is a 5-piece sonic assault hailing from Brooklyn, NY. Featuring lush soundscapes of keyboards and synths, solid bass lines, creative and well executed drums, echoed and reverbed out guitar washes, and vocal melodies and style that tie everything together perfectly. Not only does the band sound just as tight and phenomenal live as they do on their LP, but the visual aspect of the show is something that everyone should have the opportunity to experience. With a visual artist manipulating live video through an iPad and then projecting the live images over the band throughout the set using an App that they developed themselves called “ColorBeast” they are by far the most innovative and inventive band I have had the pleasure of coming across in quite some time.
The record Laminate Pet Animal opens on a track I specifically remember being one of my favourites live called “Beast in Air, Beast in Water”. It opens with a solid drum beat over a bit of ambience bringing in a delayed guitar lead until the vocals perfectly enter over the sparse drums and dark ambient soundscape underneath. By the time we hit the chorus the songs mood lightens up a bit with a catchy chorus filled with a vocal hook and a descending guitar line that compliments each other perfectly before soaring violins enter to bring us back down into the verse. I hate comparing great bands to other bands but when hearing this song for the first time I got a very strong Grizzly Bear feel.
Midway through the record we come to a track titled Let Me In that opens with a beautifully picked guitar line accompanied by a xylophone and a solid near tribal drum beat. The verse floats along until hitting possibly one of the most catchy choruses on the record. Once the chorus hits and makes it’s impression on your brain, the song drops into a minimal second verse only to make the chorus jump out even more the next time around. From start to finish this record is dense, dark, and complex, and at the same time absolutely beautiful, uplifting, and light. This record is one that I have a feeling will be in fairly heavy rotation for quite some time. With Laminate Pet Animal being released in 2012 we can all have hope that another release will not be too very far behind.
