A Woman Is A Woman (1961) dir. Jean Luc-Godard
Starring: Anna Karina, Jean-Claude Brierly, Jean-Paul Belmondo. WC: 428
Godard’s A Woman Is a Woman is a tasteful satirical musical comedy about a stripper (Anna Karina) trying to baby-trap her boyfriend (Jean-Claude Brialy), who refuses to marry her for her over-emotional tendencies. Released during the French New Wave cinematic movement of unconventional and genre-breaking indies, A Woman Is A Woman is a film dedicated to mocking American Hollywood. It uses musical sequences broken by uncomfortable acoustics, smash-cut dance montages, and colorful costuming to achieve an innovative tone and style. Juxtaposed to other musical comedies of the era, Godard plays with the viewers' expectations. A large Hollywood musical number may be substituted in this film for an awkward burlesque scene with actors looking directly at the camera. Most notably, scenes set in the underground burlesque bar feel authentic and somewhat unsexy, yet still fit Godard's cinematic aesthetic.
Starring in A Woman Is A Woman, Anna Karina’s elegance, comedic timing, and theatrics make her so compelling to watch. Dressed in colorful tights and peacoats, Karina’s fashion in the film accentuates her character’s playfulness and femininity. Comparable to Jaqueline Moreau’s costuming in Jacques Demy’s The Young Girls of Rochefort, feminine dress is not just aesthetically appealing but also quintessential to the fashion trends of French bohemian and disco glamour. Moreover, the use of Eastman color film stock makes the use of primary colors in cinematography pop.
In addition to the use of color and atmosphere, editing plays a key role in the mockery of American Hollywood films. A Woman Is A Woman had impeccable pacing, aided through the use of montages, whip-pans, and cutting on action. What may interest the viewer most is Godard’s use of montage dance scenes, which don’t have the massive wow-factor of a Gene Kelly feature but still have a quirk and candor that reflect the dance trends of the 60s.
What all of these cooky and camp elements do for the film is alleviate the cringe that may come with musicals. While it isn’t common for many people to hate on the musical genre, there are definitely some taboos and stereotypes that diminish the quality of certain musical numbers and dramatized performances. A Woman Is A Woman is like the cool Parisian girl of musical comedies and feels entirely intentional by Godard and the message of French New Wave cinema. The film enforces all the great aspects of camp, from costuming to color to jokes, and reduces all corniness into something with prestige. All in all, A Woman Is A Woman serves elevated camp, satire, and chic like the woman we should all aspire to be.

La Reine Margot (1994), directed by Patrice Chéreau, is one of those films that has deeply inspired me — it’s etched into both my mind and my heart. The theatrical scenes, the dramatic lighting, the compositions that feel lifted from a painted tragedy, the soundtrack that weighs on every gesture... everything is so intense, so alive. To me, the entire film is a masterpiece. So, in a moment of inspiration, I felt the need to pay it a small tribute: this fanmade poster, created with a lot of love and deep respect for what this film represents. I hope it speaks to other cinema lovers too!
