7. three songs you didn’t expect to like but eventually loved

“loved” i think is a bit strong for all of these, but these are all songs i did not expect to like as much as i do

Closer by the Chainsmokers & Halsey - i really hated that it was being called a millennial anthem, because the two characters in the song are both shitty people, but once i got past that, i realized the fact that the song had characters was actually a point in its favor. sure, they’re shitty people, but if they’re well-written enough for me to make that judgment, that says something about the quality of songwriting. not what you’d expect to be the strength of an EDM song.

Bodak Yellow by Cardi B - a beneficiary of lowered expectations tbh, since generally, songs where the artists brag about how rich and successful they are turn me off. i appreciate how alongside the bragging about wealth, there’s some reasonable stuff in there, like paying her mother’s bills and fixing her teeth.

Teardrops On My Guitar by Taylor Swift - i wasn’t really into taylor swift as a tween or teenager bc i couldn’t really relate, and i didn’t expect to enjoy much of her early stuff when i decided to listen to her entire discography in early 2018. somehow, this song was so cute and sweet it somehow managed to find a place in my heart.
