A DEEPER LOOK.
julien grew up a very lonely child. his parents, hardcore workaholics, were around physically about as much as they were emotionally—which is to say almost never.
with equally apathetic babysitters, no siblings, and a difficult time connecting with his peers, he quickly learned how to entertain himself, filling his days with shows, movies, books, magazines, and even the early internet. media was, in many ways, his first companion. even at a young age, he was rattling off 80s-90s pop culture trivia and fashion know-how with a sense of superiority and pride that did NOT help in his already struggling endeavor to make friends.
even as his opinions shifted away from trend following and into counterculture during middle school, others quickly grew weary of him. likewise, he grew weary of others, frustrated as time and time again nobody ever really seemed to Get It.
meeting noa changed everything. not only did they agree with the things julien had to say, but they also had real things to contribute. of course, they were still young, so neither of their opinions about culture and society were the most sophisticated ( it was mostly just rolling their eyes and calling the people around them sheep, let’s be real ), but it was more than enough for a friendship—julien’s first, real friendship. one that helped lessen his misanthropy enough to open the door for other areas of growth.
instead of staying cooped up in his often empty home save for school, he went out more, stopping by portal on the way home everyday for a rental and lengthy discussion with petey about the flaws of a recent blockbuster. these visits eventually culminated in a film studies degree from CCC and a managerial position at portal that he never plans to leave.
noa also roped him into the band. he's a visually weird-fitting puzzle piece within 2nd heaven, giving hipster NYU reject far more than rockstar. hell, he couldn’t even play an instrument before noa convinced him to pick up bass. that said, he is still a necessary cog in the machine that keeps the band going, and he takes that role very seriously. whether it's putting in extra time to keep up with his far more musically talented bandmates, making the necessary calls to book locations, or building a webpage to post updates and take advantage of the growing world wide web, he's always put his all into keeping the band going, and he's proud to see that hard work start to pay off—even if he's also a bit trepidatious about the sudden changes.
with his parents, things never really improved. he knows they don’t approve of his job or the band, and they don’t even know about the blog he started a couple years ago, but that’s okay. julien’s long since moved out and only interacts with them when he has to. he doesn’t think it much of a loss. so long as he has everything else, he’s fine. he just has to make sure he keeps hold of everything else.
personality wise, i think a big thing to note about julien is that he absolutely hates change. as a result, he hasn’t changed much as a person since he decided who he was in middle school. things have been added on, sure, but he absolutely refuses to let go of things, whether it’s an opinion, person, or grudge. he will cling onto all of these things as tight as he can because to do anything else would mean admitting defeat in some way and that simply cannot stand.
somewhat related is that he takes great pride in being right. he’s an absolutely obnoxious i told you so-er and the stick up his ass goes on for miiiiiiiles. he can never be wrong because, actually, society is wrong and someday everyone will realize that. this means that he does not need external validation to believe what he believes. however, he does thrive off of it !
will never admit that he’s needy because he’s too #aloof and #proud, but he is very needy and easily jealous to boot. his people are his people and anyone else is considered a threat™ unless they are also one of his people ( and even then… ).
despite how much of a pathetic dick i’ve painted him as so far, he does have positive qualities. for one thing, he carries himself exceptionally well. he’s confident and articulate and very sure of himself despite any interpersonal insecurities. he does not give a rats ass what other people think of him and is happy to do his own thing even if it goes against the grain which i think can be very admirable.
he is also very responsible and will never ask anyone to do something he would not do himself. when a hard job needs doing, he’ll almost always just take care of it himself. it’s not really selflessness, since the sense of accomplishment and superiority he gets from it gets his rocks off, but still.

milkshakes, hot dogs, & french fries order: he's rolling his eyes the second anyone suggests going there. a cheap price isn't worth the cheap quality if you ask him. besides, if you're wanting greasy american, dirties is right there ! he will still go ; he'll just find something to complain about the entire time ... though not without first paying for a butterscotch milkshake.
hartattack.com: the name of the blog julien has been lovingly crafting since its creation in 1994. prior to this, he was a regular haunt on various bbses and official messaging boards, slowly accumulating both fan and foe alike for his unapologetic and often controversial takes regarding the newest cultural shifts and releases in pop culture. after being inspired by links.net and other sites that would ultimately coin the term “blog” in 1999, he decided to create his own site-slash-webzine-slash-online diary for hosting his thoughts. given that his posts under the same username had already garnered a fair amount of attention, it kind of took off. he gets about 1.2k hits a week, which is really nothing to sneeze at for the time period, but also not something the average person is going to give a shit about quite yet. he thinks it makes him an expert on things though.
WANTED CONNECTIONS.
ex — jules is an insufferable bitch but is still perfectly capable of having relationships so i would love to humanize him with a prior relationship or 2 that didn't work out for whatever reason. could be amicable, could be total mess, could be whatever, really. i'm super open. just to set expectations though i will say he's unlikely to get back together with an ex because he is a burned bridges sort of guy.
cousin — family is fun ! he's colossal born and bred and i imagine his family is pretty longstanding within the town, so there's lots of room for familial dynamics there outside of the fact that he's an only child. my only caveat to this is they would not have been close when they were young until julien met noa.
