Luxor, ancient Thebes, capital of the Egyptian empire. For geographical and political reasons, Thebes gradually gained importance during Dynasty X until it became the capital of the pharaohs of the New Empire. The Luxor temple was started by Amenophis III and finished by Ramses II.
