@misterstingyjack — Revolting Pitchfiend

I am, as always, a great big sucker for an at least reasonably clever pun. That said, I'm as much of a fan of this as I am for one big reason: I think it's really interesting to have a bargain with no direct benefit. It's a way to force the revolt to trigger, of course, but there's no need if you've already removed a permanent. It's a fun exploration of bargain that's perfectly suited for this sort of remix-focused environment, because I wouldn't want a bargain for no benefit to be anywhere near a full mechanic in a set framework. Besides that, poking and goading makes for a nice repeatable payoff that's also quintessentially Devil. I like it!

@nyxbird — Chitinous Markscrawler

So, the idea of a card preparing a permanent spell that it has the tools to synergize with is an idea I've seen tossed around the fair a lot since the mechanic's inception. It serves as an interesting twist to have an effect from the graveyard that encourages you to put it there after some time on the battlefield instead of dumping it straight from hand or deck. Although, on that note, I'm not sure this really needs to be a rare? Neither the complexity or the power level really necessitate it in my mind is all. The Detective tokens make for a bit of an odd pair with the main card, but I could see that pretty easily resolved with a few pieces of precisely-deployed worldbuilding, so I won't dock you.

@tanknspank — Hellkite Dynast

Offspring and battle cry definitely make for a smooth combination. Kind of funny how what technically amounts to a french vanilla has this much depth to it, but I'm not complaining. The offspring cost is a pretty terrifying power play, sending at minimum 7 flying damage screaming into the poor sap's face. Honestly, it might actually need a nerf, but I've never had the best eye for that sort of thing. Pretty simple, all told, but still, it's powerful, it's cool, it's elegant, and thus here it stands.

Fusion Cuisine

One of my greatest joys when it comes to designing is the ability to create something so incredibly...new. Unexplored design spaces, entirely new concepts, new approaches to old ones! It's a tricky business, and yet, sometimes it really is just as simple as combining A and B.

Design a card using two mechanics that have never appeared on the same card.

Pretty simple concept, I think, so not much elaboration required. Importantly, when I say "mechanic" I'm specifically thinking of named mechanics: keywords like menace or flashback, ability words like addendum or eerie, or even defined tokens like Clues or Roles. Anything beyond that, like loose mechanical themes, aren't precise enough to be considered, unfortunately.

Additionally, I'm looking for a combination of two mechanics, but the card can have as many mechanics as you'd like otherwise. How do you know if a combination has been used before? Guess and check, mostly.

One Plus One Equals Win: Fusion Cuisine Winners

@chippyyyz — Jenara, Worthy of Asha

Immediately, "Renown: Prepare" serves as a shockingly natural-feeling connection. It's an excellent permutation on the cards in SOS where their prepared spell was a one-time bonus rather than a repeated source. Drawing two cards per renown is pretty dang strong, although it's hamstrung by, to be frank, the average creature printed with renown being fairly mediocre. Sigil of Asha does a lot of the legwork there, but there's still a good deal of setup before you can start reaping the rewards. Cast Jenara, hit in, cast the Sigil, wait until next combat, and have another creature in a position to make contact. It's a delicate dance to make a card feel rewarding to play without being too explosive or too powerful, but you've done quite a good job toeing that particular line.

@etharia1 — Phasebug Nest

A nest of angry xenobugs teleporting on top of you certainly seems like Top 10 Things I'd Least Want to Happen to Me. Even worse if said nest proceeds to get up and run after me itself, yeesh. Well, anyways...one of my favorite kind of payoff cards are ones that chip in a bit of setup themselves, but not enough that you don't need to do the legwork yourself to get full value. The warp is a nice curve-filler that widens the board in preparation, but it also has a funny quirk. Namely, if you've got a swarm established already and the mana to do so, you can simply choose to activate the exhaust after warping it, and then again when you cast it proper. Sure, you don't get to take advantage of the 3/3 body the first time around, but that's a small price to pay for the ability to double up. Exhaust and warp make for good bedfellows, and I'd love to see them pushed together more, which is really the best I can say for this contest's purposes.

@nekogirltail — Nourishing Chlorotoad

Now on the one hand, this is two mechanics from the same faction mashed together, but the exact intersection of them is what has me particularly fascinated. To wit, adapt is often used in designs as a sort of "jumpstart," an inefficient way for a card to power itself if you don't have outside sources of counters. Combining it with graft suddenly makes it into more of a reload, a way to get more counters to divvy and more cards to draw. It's not without parallel, however, because the fact remains the same that it's still pretty inefficient than importing counters from somewhere else. That, and I openly admit that I have a huge bias towards graft, sad as I am that it's essentially never returned.
