I was twelve when I took the ACT to get into a summer program. I got a better score than expected. Worst of all, I took the test the same day as my 16 year old brother and outscored him. He still resents me for it. People are crazy.

Oh, awesome! Yeah, we just had this program where, if you were in a certain position in GPA and standardized tests in middle school, you were able to take the SAT and if you did well you would get some award, and I was like 20 points away or something, haha. But I know what you mean! My SAT score when I was 11 was better than some of the people at my high school, and I'm so glad I never told them. I never would have lived that down. And I just don't get this assumption that people who do well on those things are going to look down on others, when ultimately we just end up getting treated like shit for no reason.

fuck yes figure skating for 6 years as a child and training your body to maintain musculature in specific areas (while gaining weight excessively and embarrassingly in other areas instead oops)

Exactly! The worst for me is when I slip up and mention how young I was when I first took the ACT,then mention my score on it. It’s like people expect me to look down on them so they preemptively look down on me for that.

Ooh, did you first take it super young too? Haha, my middle school had a program where I took the SAT when I was 11, but I did horribly. I mean, I still got a score that would have gotten me into most colleges, but I looked around and saw a bunch of 17 year olds and completely froze, haha. The same thing happened when I first took the GRE, actually. It was only the second time I took both that I did well, haha. But, still, people resent me for it. And I just don't get it. Then again, that same group of friends resented me when they found out I didn't get anything less than an A in college, so I probably should have learned not to listen to them so much, haha.

Yes, exactly! There's always such resentment there, and I can't understand it. It's these same people who always have such criticism for standardized tests -- most of which is completely valid -- but they always resent those who do well on them and treat them like they are somehow pretentious simply because of a numerical value given to their capacity of learning as designated by something they themselves admit is faulty. It's absolutely absurd, but it's legitimately ruined friendships of mine before. Even one of my closest groups of friends used to make fun of me for that. There's this automatic assumption, I think, that if you do exceptionally well on the SAT/ACT/GRE, you think you're better than everyone else or you're explicitly condoned by society as better than everyone else. And that's really not the case at all.

YES! I always talk politics, philosophy and etymology when I’m drunk but when I’m sober I don’t want people to see how far my nerdiness extends. Also, drunk is the only time I reveal test scores for the same reason.

OMG YES EXACTLY. I never reveal my test scores, because it always sort of shuts you into this implicit category within the people around you, like you're somehow simultaneously better and worse than they are, and it's honestly just ridiculous. I actually never once revealed my ACT score in high school, except to my best friend at the time, because I knew everyone would resent me for it. So it takes that lack of filter before I'll admit those sorts of things. I really hate how people harangue standardized tests for being inaccurate, but then also resent those who do well on them. Like, I admit they're not the best tests of aptitude, but I can still be happy for doing well on them, okay.

Also etymology is one of the things I need to learn more about. I know Latin and some Greek derivatives, but I really need to learn more about Old English and French and those sorts of etymological traditions.

I do the same thing! I also relapse to my spelling bee days and spell big words. I think I seem smarter when drunk because I’m less guarded then.

Haha! I can understand that. I do something similar, I think, in that I let my guards down when I'm drunk but it's more because I suspect people will hate me when they find out how nerdy (academically) I really am. Like, I tone it down a lot on tumblr, and people still find me pretentious -- which is actually less of a reaction than I normally get around people irl -- so I'm used to keeping it quiet. But when I'm drunk I lose my filter and let down my guards and I'm like LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT ALL OF MY THOUGHTS ABOUT THE ROLE OF PATRIARCHY IN POSTMODERNIST AND METAFICTIONAL THOUGHT.

I should really never try to pick up guys in bars, huh?

i’m a jack and coke or vodka and sprite girl, usually. i only drink soda with alcohol. i don’t love super fruity drinks most of the time—if i’m drinking alcohol, i want it to taste like alcohol. and i like dry red wines. i’m weird. :P

Ahh, see I can't even drink soda with alcohol. It's the carbonation that gets me, so there's pretty much nothing I can drink other than fruity drinks (which isn't that bad, because I grew to love juice as a kid since I couldn't drink much else) and wine. And lmao, I used to drink dry red wines all the time -- actually the first wine I got hooked on was Cabernet Sauvignon -- but ever since I can't even look at a glass of red wine without remembering that awful night I spent throwing it up again and again. I just can't do it.

Hahaha, thanks everyone for answering! I was just thinking about how I wanted to cut back some, so I was curious about everyone else. Though, jfc, I can't imagine following nearly 300 people. I was up to nearly 200 on my old blog, and my dash was killing me!
