Hiking with Children in Comeragh, Co. Waterford
FAMILY-FRIENDLY
With the midterm break here, the parents are wondering how to spend the quality time together with their children. Since the Covid 19 pandemic hit the world, outdoor activities became very popular. "Is it worth taking your kids hiking?" you might be thinking. The answer is unquestionably yes!
I only started hiking about four years ago, but I quickly got the kids involved. Hiking with your family is always enjoyable. As long as your children like being outside and walking, you will have a good time together! Hiking not only provides wonderful family time, but it also allows youngsters to connect with nature. They are able to escape the monotony of concrete structures of the city and appreciate how lovely it is to be outside. Your children may even grow up to appreciate and protect their environment rather than polluting it. Children of all ages benefit from exercise, and they are constantly exposed to animals while hiking. We've seen wild mountain goats, deer, sheep, newts, frogs, birds of prey, and a wide variety of other species.
Today, I am inviting you on a journey in Comeragh Mountains in Co. Waterford
Waterford's Comeragh Mountains give the ideal setting for an adventure. There's something for everyone in this gorgeous, glaciated mountain range, whether you're looking for something quick and easy or want to spend the day exploring.
After parking at Kilclooney Wood Car Park, we took a pleasant stony path west through a shady forest with tall trees on both sides. The mountains will begin to take shape after you cross the ladder over the fence and hike between the rocks.
The walk toward Coumshingaun Lake becomes a bit more difficult at this point, more uphill with many rocks.
Coumshingaun Lake, which is pear-shaped and surrounded on three sides by high cliffs, offers spectacular views of County Waterford from its summit, creating a magnificent natural amphitheater. The flow of glaciers during the ice era created corries. It takes approx. 1.5 hour of hike to reach the lake. Don't forget to use the sun screen protection since you'll be exposed in this open area.
We were accompanied by the goats and sheep for most of the time. We also had to cross small river streams few times which was even more fun for kids.
Once we got to the lake – the view was amazing. Few people were brave enough to swim 400m up the mountain in the freezing cold glaciated lake.
Some were camping in colourful tents. We found a great spot to have our sandwich with warm tea from the flask and admire the beauty of the place. Make sure to bring the water and some snacks with you since these are mountains and there is no shop around. The children had fun skimming stones on the lake’s surface. After a while we decided to head down the same way to the car park and stop at Mahon Waterfalls on our way home.
The River Mahon cascades from the Comeragh Plateau over the sandstone cliffs and rocks below to form Mahon Falls, an 80-metre tumbling waterfall.
There is a parking lot close to the falls, and it is a short approx. 20 minutes’ walk to them. The falls are visible from the parking lot, and a gravel path leads all the way to them. The walk isn't particularly strenuous. It's more of a gently undulating trail that appears to be well maintained, making it ideal for families. On the day we went, there were a lot of families there. After taking few family pictures, there was one more great surprise waiting for the kids called ‘’Magic Road’’. If you come across this section of road, you might want to give it a try. If you park at the bottom of the hill and let go of the handbrake, the car will roll backwards! I'm not kidding! The kids were so excited! Is it a mystical power from the ancient mountains? Is it illusion? Is there a hidden power force that defies logic? You'll have to go find out for yourself! Just keep an eye out for other traffic!
We had a fantastic day exploring and hiking around Comeragh as a family. Such wonderful memories and family time!
SO TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER, SHUT IT DOWN, AND GET OUTSIDE!
