Those who have taken either of my shotgun courses know how much I hate the use of birdshot for home or personal defense. It’s simply NOT a reliable option for stopping a determined threat and the variable downsides outweigh any “upside” to its use. Will it hurt? Certainly. So does hitting your shin on the coffee table.  An Associated Press (AP) column looking back on violence in 2019 notes that California has more gun control than any state yet witnessed the most “mass slayings” of any state. To date, California has universal background checks, gun registration requirements, gun confiscation laws, a 10-day waiting period on gun purchases, an “assault weapons” ban, a one-handgun-a-month purchase limit, a ban on campus carry for self-defense, and a ban on teachers being armed to shoot back if under attack. They also require would-be gun buyers to acquire a safety certificate from the state before being allowed to make a gun purchase. California has ammunition controls as well. What does this all mean exactly? Simple: GUN CONTROL DOES NOTHING TO AFFECT THESE CRIMES!! Get armed. Go out and train with an instructor. A woman slashes a child’s face in public and attempts to stab another before being ran off by the children’s parents. (This is in the country of Georgia). There are psychopaths all around. At any given moment, one of them could make a determination that you or your child is a threat and act on their perception. You may “think” you would be ready to act....but would you really? How do you know for sure? What measures do you take on a regular basis to assure you’re always “switched on” when out with your loved ones? When you’re out and about in your daily life, the necessity to stay aware of what may be happening around you or of possible impending danger could literally mean the difference between life or death in certain environments. Notice how no one saw a man walking toward them with his face covered as being strange or out of the ordinary enough to react? This is “normalcy bias”...the tendency to normalize the unusual or strange out of disbelief that it’s ACTUALLY occurring in your presence. Your awareness should be so that anything out of the ordinary should trigger a response of some sort..in some cases it could be a mere observation that affects a decision (should I stay or un-ass the area?) In others, the observation and affected decision could be more severe. No one is perfect, and you may not see everything, but when you DO, don’t pass the unusual off casually so easy. Its not about being paranoid, it’s about being prepared. (While getting your training at the range is cool, sharpening other skills such as awareness and first aid is a must!)
