(1/?) Ahhh I'm sorry I didn't clarify this stuff when I recommended to you to read Daredevil. I saw that you got a recommendation for starting with Bendis's run on the series. I recommended starting with Waid because the 90s and early 2000s Daredevil content was really edgydark and at odds tonally with the rest of the stuff you were enjoying (the nineties were the first time many comic book publishers could get away with publishing a lot of r-rated stuff and they all took that and ran with it)
(2/?) and also had issues with their portrayal/demonization of addiction, misogyny and some other stuff, I don’t remember exactly what, I think there was something about HIV? I don’t know which authors were responsible for the problems I’m talking about, so the Bendis stuff might be fine, but I wouldn’t have started with that era as a whole. If you still want to read Bendis’s run go ahead and I hope you like it, but I can’t help you with the sequencing in that case because I don’t know. If you
(¾) do decide to start with Waid though, I can help clarify for you. Waid wrote two different Daredevil series. They are consecutive, but there was a gap in publishing in between them and the numbering on the collections starts over, which makes it confusing. You’ll want to read the whole 2011 series, which has seven volumes if you’re reading the trade paperbacks, and they don’t have subtitles, and then read the 2014 series, which starts with the one subtitled “Devil at Bay”, and then
(4/4) “West-Case Scenario” then “The Daredevil You Know” and then “The Autobiography of Matt Murdock” . The bit where he has a kid is a 50th anniversary special and is not canon. I feel like they shouldn’t have put it in the book without clarifying but don’t worry about sequencing it. Let me know if you have any other questions or if I’ve been unclear, and I’m sorry I didn’t explain this initially.
no problem for not mentioning before, thank you so much for clarifying all this! people who know all this are just?? amazing. a genius
(especially that non-canonical 50th anniversary special, jfc marvel why do you confuse new readers like this)
now that i’ve got your guide i’ll probably try again (i think i read the 2011 first volume before getting off track, so i should hopefully be able to find the next one next and keep going!). for Bendis i’ll probably look at some reviews before i decide, thanks for the warning!
@ravencrantz look i got answers and it all makes sense now!
