#JackedKirby - Happy 79th Bday Mike Royer!!! 🎂🎂🎂 Happy 79th Bday to one of Jack Kirby’s best (and also rumored to be one of his personal favorite) inker Mr Mike Royer!!! 🎂🎂🎂 Mike did some amazing work with Jack on his DC runs (I personally love his inking on The Demon, pic 2 here) and he followed him back to Marvel where he did a bunch of Jack’s stuff upon the King’s return. 🎂🎂🎂 I also included a few other personal faves of mine, a two page spread from Weird Mystery Tales (pic 3) and the cover of 2001 #issue10 which I love so much! 🎂🎂🎂 Pic 1 is Jack with Royer at the 1975 San Diego Comic Con.... he is so young! Pics 5/6 are Tommy and Mike meeting Mike at the Big Apple con a few years back. It was an honor! 🎂🎂🎂 Mike is the consummate pro, not only by be an amazing inker but by also lettering and pencilling himself. He also had a very long career working for Disney designing retail packaging and stock art for use on everything you can imagine. I actually own a piece of his Winnie the Pooh original art (it’s at the framer... this is Mike!) and has some amazing stories of his 50 years in the biz! Happy bday Mike!!!! #JackedKirby - Is That Machine Man... or the Purple Silver Surfer??? 💥💥💥 By the time Machine Man got his own series in 1978 Jack was in full bloom in terms of executing his most wildest ideas... when you are writing, penciling and editing a comic you are afforded that opportunity. It didn’t take a few issues... it was right off the bat. Look at this wacky sequence in #Issue1 of the series from April if 1978... 💥💥💥 It seems X-51 has found himself in a bit of a traffic jam and decides to take his travel options into his own hands... so he exists the vehicle and out of the bottom of his shoes pops out a couple of wheels!!! (Pic 3) 💥💥💥 Now that would be cool enough... and certainly wacky. But Jack takes it one step further, havingbthe two skated feet join together to form a skateboard!!! He then proceeds to shred through the lanes of traffic, bobbing and weaving as he goes (Pic 2). He is jumping cars, riding on hoods... all until he lands in front of a police car! When they throw on the sirens, X-51 does what he does best... he exits by turning on his boot rockets and flies away!!! 💥💥💥 Another cool tidbit comes in X-51’s first bit of dialogue. He mentions he deserves a “No Prize” for guessing something correctly... this of course was a call back to the 60s and the Merry Marvel Marching Society sending out letters awarding fans with a “No Prize” for pointing out errors or other things wrong in the book! The letter itself was the prize... the No Prize was just that.. nothing!!!
