When I was starting out, I saw people around me filling sketchbooks and telling unique, personal and often funny stories that seemed to flow right out of them.

I couldn’t do that.

I had NO IDEAS.

I didn’t know anything.

I didn’t know what material mattered to me, I had no idea how to start. I didn’t know how to follow an idea through. I didn’t know what skills I would need to complete it.

It took me years, but eventually, slowly, I came to realize that I had to start one piece at a time, and build up from there, like breathing, and eventually I came to understand how I needed to work. Since then I've drawn thousands of pages (it's true!) and learned that what is important is that the stories reflect what I believe and who I am. That's why I'm teaching Storytelling Flow, to share what I've learned about how to find and trust my own ideas, my own images and my own voice.

In Storytelling Flow

we'll learn how amazing it can feel to have nurtured and expanded an idea, and also to have been surprised by it.

We’ll catch an idea or image, see it all the way through then look back and reflect.

We'll learn how to develop something and be interested in it.

We'll learn how to revise it and be proud of it.

At the end, we'll learn how to reflect and work even better and make it more personal next time.

Storytelling Flow

is a 6-week online class beginning Feb 6. Until Jan 13, I am offering it to you previous enrollees at a pay-what-you-can discount.

This winter at ActonArt, we’re holding a 12 week Comics Course!

In this class, students will learn basics for producing sequential art like comics and zines. In this first project, they were looking at how panels can divide up time and show things change in an amusing or poignant manner!

These have been up long enough to get graded so HEY NOW I CAN POST THEM HERE

This one was a layout challenge, where we took a very basic script and tried to put it in 3 different page layouts. And since my idea involved Deedee and Karl being amateur heroes getting thrown through a loop with their first actually hard monster, I chose the layouts that I thought would display that best.

I put them in order of Best to Worst (and also newest to oldest, weirdly enough). I feel like the first 2 would work well next to eachother, with Deedee’s panicked thoughts replacing Karl’s lines of distress in the big splash panel.
