Since the underground has received little, if any, academic attention from literary critics (and this brief introduction could easily take a longer look), today's readers of graphic narrative may not know how hard-won the opportunity was to visualize non-normative lives of women in an aesthetically engaged format during the significant period when comics shifted from the strictly commercial to the politically and artistically revolutionary.
