looks like the minor drama of Hong Kong winning gold for men's foil hasn't reached tumblr (to be fair, seems like my side of tumblr doesn't care about the Olympics at all; not a one of you is posting about it) but it HAS been very funny on the other platforms.

Basically, the final match was our guy (Cheung Kalong) and an Italian athlete (Filippo Macchi). it was incredibly close in which the refs had to review video footage of the bout to determine who was the winner, and they chose Cheung. medals were given out, etc. etc. eeeeexcept the president of the Italian Fencing Federation has raised a big stink that Macchi should have won and accused the refs, who are South Korean and Taiwanese, of favouring Hong Kong because he opines that these countries are, I kid you not, "geographically close"

...what makes you think a Taiwanese person would want to hear "March of the Volunteers" in any given situation. sir these are whole ass other countries and cultures. also, as some HKers are pointing out, they clearly were okay with it when Czech and German refs called the semifinal that brought Macchi to the next round... much "geographically closer" to Italy than SK is to HK!!

Macchi is cool though, since he's gone on record to say that he respects the decision. Hong Kongers have chilled out on him now.

but, it didn't stop our Pizza Hut declaring that pineapple is a free topping on all pizzas until Thursday which is a wonderfully petty and therefore very Hong Kong-like move in general though I must say basic pineapple is far from the most abominable thing we've put on pizza.

Absolutely volcanic take but the Penn quests in totk should have been about Link as well as/instead of Zelda. Penn should have been following rumours about them Both. It should have been the player’s opportunity to connect with Link’s quiet personality as it was established in the previous game. He likes cooking and eating, he’s an equestrian, he’s a bit chaotic with a fondness for puns and sarcasm. So he was the one who tamed the golden horse, he founded the cooking group. The Foothill Stable lads are naked because they heard a rumour Link fought in his underpants. Link takes the farm tools to help Zelda replant Magda’s garden, because they’re both working together to restore Hyrule. Pointing out things Link did before the game started would have grounded the player into the world in a way totk really needed, and would have given a more impactful, focused view of Zelda’s character - instead of her having a scattered, jack-of-all trades personality, the rumours would have told us that she was bookish, had a penchant for natural science, a sense of duty to help her people. It would have been the chance to show how her core personality from botw helped her thrive as a leader of a post-apocalyptic world, how her range of knowledge and pursuit of experimentation was helping Hyrule re-discover lost trades and skills, and it would have shown the gap that was created when she disappeared. Instead Link was an empty shell with little connections to the land and only fleeting references that he was the hero who fought the Calamity, and Zelda was a one-note matyr who characters only missed and urged you to find because of her status as a Princess and that made her good at Everything.

#comix rambles #totk critical #this is me AND ANOTHER THING 😡👆ing the tag rant i just reblogged #like the AUDACITY of totk to make zelda’s memories arc almost entirely reactive and almost a reduction of her botw arc except removing tha #sense of responsibility and guilt from it. like zelda is not supposed to be there and this fight with ganondorf is neither her fight or her #fault she just floats alongside her own narrative watching rauru get all the emotional beats like ‘sorry king rauru’ ‘no i’m the king #it’s My Fault’ ‘i’m here for you’ then just making the ultimate sacrifice because that’s the first option she’s given #in botw we see her struggle under the weight of her duty and power. we see her excitement at nature and her love for studying and books but #with little to no way to express it because of her role in the monarchy and in the prophecy. totk should have seen her happy and free and #indulging in her favourite hobbies and showing how those hobbies themselves are what make her a good princess and a strong person.#instead all of the emphasis is put on how she’s always successful and everybody loves her and her actual personality is little more than #a footnote summed up in a couple lines of dialogue ‘oh zelda liked history so she made the zonai survey team’ ‘oh zelda read this in a book #why was she not engineering right alongside mineru. why wasn’t she constantly trying to think of other ways to do things in the past.#why didn’t she use the lessons she learnt about acting in a crisis from the calamity in those moments between the demon king’s rise to powe #and their ill-fated final fight against him?#for all it tauted in it’s promotional material and for all it shares the exact same world and characters totk showed very little interest i #being a sequel to botw. it didn’t want to continue it’s themes or character progression. it didn’t even want link to have bought his house.
