Commander BFF: Eldritch Moon #1

Hello hello and welcome back to season 2 of my Commander BFF series, where we find the best home for the new cards in each Magic set. Kicking off with a little known common for a little known general: Toshiro Umezawa and his new BFF Succumb to Temptation!

Bam! This deck is a dream of mine that’s slowly coming together, and what it needed was some good draw power on an Instant. Even without your critical mass of kill-spells, people are sacrificing and killing creatures all the time in commander; so at any time feel free to use that death trigger to target Succumb to Temptation with Toshiro’s ability, and pay 2 life to cast your mono-black instant speed Divination.

1. Toshiro requires instants to fill utility roles like draw, removal, etc. 2. Succumb to Temptation is an instant that draws very cost-effectively. 3. Imagine Toshiro speaking that flavor text as he wipes his blade. Pretty badass if I say so myself.

Commander BFF: Shadows Over Innistrad #9

As someone who’s competitive deck is Slobad all-in combo, I can tell you I was really happy to see Tamiyo’s Journal. It gives me artifacts to sacrifice, it gives me draw when I need it, and a tutor when I don’t. However, the best new home for this Journal is probably in Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer. White and Red lack draw, and Jor Kadeen wants metalcraft. The turn after you drop the book, you’ve got minimum two artifacts. If metalcraft is already online, you’re drawing cards or tutoring for a True Convictions. Tamiyo’s Journal is doing something you want it to do in this deck no matter what stage in the game you are.

1. Jor Kadeen needs metal and Tamiyo’s Journal is/makes metal 2. Red/White can’t draw cards for crap and Tamiyo’s Journal is a clue factory. 3. White’s good tutor is expensive; Journal isn’t, and can be repeatable. Happy Prevailing!
