Rocker drifts back to consciousness slowly. His head hurts, in a dull, distant way, like the hurt is present but bit fully engaged with its job.

His shoulder is also in pain.

Squinting, he sees a blurry figure next to him. Familiar. Gray. Warm.

"Tommy?"

"Hey Rocker. It's okay, go back to sleep," says the figure.

When he is more capable of holding a thought in his head for more than five minutes, the doctors update him on his injuries. Rocker can only feel miserable at being benched for six weeks, minimum.

"Can't I do paperwork?" he asks Hicks who came down to Cedar-Sinai once the hospital alerted him.

Tommy snorts. "You can't use your right arm, Donny."

"Can't I send Tommy in pretending he is me?"

"As amusing as that would be for me personally," says Hicks in the driest possible tone, "I don't wish to have a civilian pretending to be SWAT and allowing him access to the inner workings of the place. Also, no offense Tommy, but I don't think you're up to the rigor of SWAT duty."

"None taken, sir."

"I bet Luca would be the first to notice it's you and not me," Rocker tells his brother.

Shrugging in agreement, Tommy sticks his hands into his pocket. "Guess you'll be my house guest for the next six weeks."

"Do you have your belongings?" Hicks asks. "I'll have Stevens grab your things for you from your locker if not."

Rocker frowns. "Tommy, the nurse was saying that someone left behind a duffel. Can you check that drawer?"

There is only a change of clothes and a book - Metro 2033 - in the bag. "I kept my phone and apartment keys in that bag too," Rocker says.

Hicks grumbles under his breath and then says, "I'll ask around to see who has your things. In the meantime, Tommy, send me your number and address - here's my card - and get your place ready for your brother."

"Sure. Good to see you, sir."

"It's good to see you again too, kid. And if you ever want to switch from LAFD to LAPD, I'd be happy to get you into SWAT academy. Can't hurt to have an extra human tank on the teams."

"With his luck, I'll end up on Hondo's team and outperform Donny in everything," Tommy jokes.

Rocker scoffs but says nothing. After Hicks leaves, Tommy drops into a chair next to the bed and takes out his phone. "Alright, what do you need from your place?"

"My reading glasses, my electric toothbrush, my toothpaste because yours is too minty, underwear of my own, the sketchbook i left I think on the kitchen peninsula or in the workspace in the guestroom. It's the one with the Superman drawing on the first page. Oh, and my pencils."

Tommy narrows his eyes at his twin. "You're such a hassle."

Rocker raises his eyebrows, then winces. "i'm injured, you ass."

"How did you get hit in the head anyway?"

Groaning, Rocker says, "Big, heavy chain with one of those huge hooks. Came swinging at us out of nowhere. Caught my shoulder and then my head. Thank God for helmets."

"And thick skulls."

"That too."

What Rocker doesn't share is that the instant he saw the metal hook, his immediate thought was that it would hit the back of Deacon's head. That much weight at that velocity would have shattered his vertebrae after it snapped his skull forward.

So Rocker just lunged forward to take the impact instead.

When Hicks comes back to HQ with news that Rocker is awake and alright, there is a cheer of relief.

"Also, who brought his things down to the hospital?" he asks. "His phone and keys aren't in there."

Deacon raises his hand. "I have his things. I'll bring them down to the hospital."

"You can pass the things to Stevens," the commander says. "Fairly sure the hospital will discharge him into his brother's care before the end of the day, and 20-Squad's just starting your shift."

Is that reluctance on Deacon's face? Hicks frowns, but brushes the observation aside when Deacon pulls out a smaller bag and hands it to Stevens. As the men and women go on their duties, Hicks retires to his office to update the paperwork for Rocker.

Maybe he should have promoted Deacon to 50-David instead of Rocker. Deacon is steadfast and calm, and commands respect effortlessly. Rocker is good, in his own way: observant, focused on the job, determined. But nearly every newbie that is posted to 50-Squad challenges his authority and he has to stomp on their egos a few times before they listen. Deacon would not have had that problem.

Scoffing at his own bias, Hicks opens the necessary documents. He needs to sign off on so many forms that he's already bored thinking about them.

Still, Rocker's protection of Deacon at his own expense will help his standing in SWAT. Mumford left massive shoes to fill.

Don’t worry my delulu brain is already thinking up scenarios similar to wats in the show. Instead of Molly, Hicks runs into Rocker and then Deacon comes up and their all standing their awkwardly lmao.

“We don’t have any pilots either-“ Luca starts and Rocker abruptly shakes his head. “Hold on, I’m getting new information.” He mutes the call again and raises an eyebrow. “We can’t risk a pilot-“

“You can if I’m the pilot.” Rocker says.

“Sergeant, with all due respect, you can’t be serious.” Hicks tells him bluntly.

“These guys clearly know who the police are. I’m willing to bet they’ve done their research.” Rocker says. “And I’m the only one with a twin brother who happens to be LAFD.”

“Are you insane?” Luca blurts out. “You’re not posing as your brother-“
