Tess was almost to the door, so close to escape, when she heard the voice calling to her. She closed her eyes, muttered a few curse words under her breath, then turned slowly and tried to look at Maxil with as much innocence as she could muster.
"Oh, you’re awake." She cleared her throat. "Hope that wasn’t my fault, I was trying to be quiet. I just thought I’d go and…find…something..to eat." She made a face at her own lie, but it was too late to do anything but go along with it.
