‘Mission 7′ kicks off phase 2 of New Shepard testing for Blue Origin Following last year’s successful initial testing program of the New Shepard rocket, Blue Origin kicked off phase 2 by launching ‘Mission 7′ December 12. A brand-new propulsion module and upgraded crew capsule were lofted to over 100 kilometers in altitude during the 10-minute flight. The vehicle reached a maximum speed of mach 2.94, or 2,255 miles per hour. Mission 7 begins the next phase of the company’s test program on the rocket, which is slated to take commercial payloads and paying customers on a suborbital flight into space. ‘Crew Capsule 2.0′, as it is dubbed, featured actual flight-worthy windows and 12 commercial and research payloads inside, including an astronaut simulator dummy named ‘Mannequin Skywalker.’ The propulsion module used in Tuesday’s flight was brand new as the previous New Shepard booster was retired after October, 2016′s Ascent Abort test. Tuesday’s flight by Blue Origin also comes on the heels of multiple potential milestones by their biggest competitor, SpaceX, which aims to refly both a Dragon spacecraft and Falcon 9 rocket for the first time on the upcoming CRS-13 mission.
