PLANNING 24/12/21 - ‘THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER’ AND ‘THE PRAYERS OF JANE AUSTEN’
FOR MY MOTHER’S FUNERAL
My mother died peacefully in her sleep in care on the 20th at 103. My sister was with her and my brother and I had seen her the day before. Her death was very quick (the care home rang on the Friday evening and Mum passed away on the Monday just after lunchtime). This is a good death - but still very sad. I’d thought she was going to live forever.
Mum wants to be cremated with her ‘Book of Common Prayer’. My son and I went to see her this morning and she had two books with her. I didn’t like to look too closely (and it’s a long story) but we worked out that she also has ‘The Prayers of Jane Austen’. She had Jane Austen’s prayers with her in the care home so I can only assume that they sent them with her. I am sure my mother is delighted and Jane Austen is flattered,
My daughter has offered to do a reading at the funeral and suggested something literary for Gran because she was such a great reader. On this Christmas Eve I end up googling Jane Austen’s prayers.

Pudding, the last Sunday before Advent
“What is Stir-up Sunday?
It is a tradition that harks back to Victorian times when the family would gather together to stir the Christmas pudding five weeks before Christmas. The opening words of the Book Of Common Prayer, used on the last Sunday before Advent, reads: "Stir up, we beseech thee, O Lord, the wills of thy faithful people," so the tradition stands that this is the day to get stirring!”
... Christmas pudding would traditionally contain 13 ingredients to represent Jesus and his disciples.
It is traditionally stirred (while making a wish) by each member of the family from East to West, to remember the Wise Men that visited Jesus in the Nativity Story.”

Slow to our senses
"Lord, we are slow to come to our senses. Often our feeble offerings are merely extensions of our sin. Quicken your Spirit within us and move us to offer up that which is pleasing to you: justice, kindness, and humilty of heart. Amen."
The fear of not committing ourselves fully
"Lord, if we are to be afraid of anything, let it be the fear of not committing ourselves fully to you. Let us fear that the day will pass without our having lightened the load of another. Let us fear that someone will come looking for you and find only us... Teach us the fear that leads to wisdom : and the love that drives out fear."
