Did you know there’s a general election coming in four weeks on Thursday 12th December? Stupid question, of course you did. I don’t know how you could escape the news. It’s been a shit show of a campaign so far, what with Boris, I don’t know how many children I have, Johnson blustering his way about the countryside, getting told to fuck off by all and sundry, Nigel, I’ll move to Europe if Brexit isn’t done, Farage being a smug twat, and the SNP, Labour, Lib Dems, Greens, and Independents going off on one about tactical voting, but refusing to do anything at all that vaguely resembles persuading people they might be a better choice than the Tories, and helping the country to kick the blue bastards out.

You’d be forgiven for throwing on a pair of headphones and blasting Christmas music from now until 13th December in an effort to cancel out the madness.

BUT!

Here’s the thing - it’s absolutely imperative that you register to vote, and then get out there on election day and make your voice heard.

The deadline for registration is creeping up on us. You have until

5pm on 26 November if you live in England, Scotland or Wales

5pm on 21 November if you live in Northern Ireland

You can register to vote if you are:

aged 16 or over (or 14 or over in Scotland)

a UK citizen (or an Irish, EU or Commonwealth citizen with a permanent UK address)

Do you see what the above sentence indicates ....? You can vote in this general election if you’re a Commonwealth citizen. Do you realise how many of our universities have students from Antigua, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, Malta, South Africa, and Zimbabwe (to name but a few, and the full list can be found here ) and they can vote in this general election.

Please do everything you can to persuade people to vote, and if you’re not yet of age, but you can drive a car (perfectly possible), then you might want to consider driving those less able to get about to their polling station on 12th December so they can vote.

Rock the vote, and rock the country on 12th December!!

I've been out of the loop for a bit, but I think certain political parties did promise to allow Australians a vote on whether or not to go Republic if they succeed in the next elections. And guess, what? It's 2019 - which means it's election year. I'm not surprised they sent several royals down under for the commonwealth games, followed by the bump tour - which Andrew had to come and make amends for after that screw up.

I think they realise that a lot of people from the Commonwealth identify with Meghan (as is exemplified on twitter). It’s not an accident that Harry is now the Commonwealth Youth Ambassador. It’s not a coincidence that their first trip was to the Oceania countries. It’s not a coincidence that the commonwealth flowers were on Meghan’s veil. It’s not a coincidence that they sent Harry and Meghan to the Nelson Mandela exhibit. IMO they are positioning Harry and Meghan as the royals to woo the Commonwealth countries, leveraging Meghhan’s mixed-race heritage.

Questions over whether all Commonwealth realms, particularly those with slave legacy, share enthusiasm for 70th anniversary

Boris Johnson has claimed that the Queen’s platinum jubilee will see people celebrating “unabashed” across the Commonwealth.

But, speaking on the eve of Britain’s four-day commemoration of the anniversary, critics said celebrations in many places were expected to be muted or nonexistent.

The jubilee is expected to be particularly ignored in the Caribbean, where an ill-judged tour by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge of Belize, Jamaica and the Bahamas in March was met with protests, calls for slavery reparations and for the Queen to be removed as head of state.

Rosalea Hamilton, a campaigner for the Advocates Network who organised slavery reparations protests in Jamaica, said she has not seen any focus or attention on the jubilee, which she said is “not resonating” in Jamaica. The founding director of Jamaica’s Institute of Law and Economics at the University of Technology said the country is “not in a jubilant mood”.

She said there’s “nothing to celebrate” and that for 70 years the country has been “dealing with the legacies of our colonial history” that still continue today.
