Watching this old interview with David Foster Wallace from a German TV show in 2003 and at the very end (the whole thing is 84 minutes and pretty interesting to watch) Wallace answers a question about entertainment by saying that for things to change we’ll have to see “fragmentation in the entertainment industry.”

Over the last few years, there have been all kinds of internet think-pieces about the loss of the communal experience as the number of TV stations and different platforms through which to view media has increased, our attentions have become more individualistic and less and less reaches the eyeballs of a majority of the country, as it once did when there were fewer entertainment choices. 12 years ago, Wallace spoke of this very thing (and how it had already happened in the magazine industry) as a great opportunity for entertainment companies to stop trying to appeal to 10-20 million with the lowest forms of entertainment and instead appeal to less people with a higher mind.

I think this might be happening now. Makes me feel good about where we’re headed.
