Guess who’s back…Guess who’s back…Yates is back…
It appears the premiership is not the only place with big transfer news this weather with Newstalk announcing new personnel changes in shaking up their day time line up. Along with the new Pat Kenny’s weekday morning slot from 10-12.30 Ivan Yates has been recalled to the breakfast show squad 6.30am-10am every weekday morning. Mr Yates was last on air on April 3rd 2012 and has been reinstated on an adhoc contract after his year long sabbatical in Swansea. He rejoins Chris Donoghue and the rest of the Breakfast show team which has experienced a varied starting line up in this interim period. Norah Casey had been co-hosting the show until Sept 2012 and then Newstalks own political editor Shane Coleman stepped in until now.
So while Yates’ return to the station is no prodigal son calling it does restore some order to the popular morning show which had reached strong listenership results during Yates’ tenner with 138,000 adult listeners recorded from April 11’ – March 12 (JNLR research).
Time will tell if the show can re boost its numbers up to its previously enjoyed highs vs the latest JNLR book showing a drop of 13%120,000 Adult listenership (July 12’-Jun 13’). What is already pleasing is the presence of banter and improv between Donoghue and Yates that had been missing since his departure. If this grows traction there will be the opportunity for the show to inherit some Pat Kenny listeners in advance of his kick off slot at 10.00 am.
One risk Newstalk will run with this all male day time line up is the attraction and re attraction of female listeners which Norah Casey had achieved with some success during her stint with 45,000 female listeners during Oct 11-Sept 12’ JNLR book (down 11% to 40,000 Apr 12 – Mar 13’).
With the latest changes installed across the station the station editor Garrett Harte is very excited by the new look schedule and said that these changes “mark a turning point in independent radio”. It will be interesting to see if it results in much of the same or moves Newstalk into a more established position among the national stations? ‘Listen’ to this space!

Adrian Kennedy bids farewell to FM104 for ye old enemy 98FM
Adrian Kennedy is to leave his popular FM104 Phoneshow to join rival station 98FM. The move is seen a big coup for Communicorp-owned 98FM, who have flagged behind 104 in the JNLR ratings in recent times. The company recently moved lunchtime host Ray Foley from his Today FM show in a bid to boost ratings in the high-profile breakfast slot.
