"villains never break up because they're tenacious even when they love."
VINCENZO (2021)
Your Daughter Asks To Call Him Dad ~ Song Joongki
“Joongki, would you like to come and see my bedroom tonight too?”
Your eyes shot across the room to where Joongki sat, smiling weakly as his head nodded in response to the little girl that held onto your legs, balancing herself carefully. You excepted nothing less from Joongki as he stood up from the sofa, extending his hand out for your daughter to take, leading her out of the living room and towards the staircase, with you in tow behind the two of them.
With admiration in her eyes, your daughter followed everything that Joongki did, jus as always. With you being a single parent, he had been the closest thing that she had to a father figure in her life for almost two years in, thankfully for you, she was too young to remember any different, but you could still remember those tougher days.
You never imagined that someone would step up for her like Joongki had done. Although there was a little apprehension at the start, after just a couple of weeks in your daughter’s company, Joongki knew that she was someone that he wanted to take good care of.
And he proved that to you as you made your way up the stairs too, guiding your daughter into the bathroom so that he could take care of brushing her hair and teeth before tucking her in.
In everything that he did with her, Joongki had a wide smile on his face. She was infectious, just like you were, he was never quite sure why anyone would want to walk away from the two of you, but he was very pleased that someone had left the door open so that he could walk through it.
“Can you read me a story?” Your daughter asked Joongki once she laid down.
“Are you sure?” Joongki nervously asked her, perching down at the end of her bed, “do you want your mum to read you one instead? She’s good with stories, right?”
Your daughter’s head shook back at him, “they told us in school today that it’s nice to get your mum and dad to read you stories, so I want for you to do it for a change.”
“You don’t have a dad though sweetheart,” Joongki softly reminded her, careful not to startle her. “You know that I’m just your mum’s boyfriend, your dad has gone away, remember?”
As her eyes looked to you, your head nodded in agreement with everything that Joongki had to say. “If Joongki was your dad then you wouldn’t call him Joongki, you know that Y/D/N.”
Once you had finished speaking, her eyes looked across to Joongki again, much more clearly than before. Joongki felt terrible, knowing that the situation around her dad had always confused her, even if she didn’t ask too many questions, she was always sceptical.
“Your daddy went away some time ago, but unfortunately he made the decision not to come back,” Joongki told her, resting his hand against the top of her knee gently, “but you’ve got the most amazing mummy to look after you, and maybe I could read you a book, but not as your dad, but as Joongki instead, how does that sound to you?”
“If my daddy went away, then why can’t I replace him?” She then asked, continuing to flicker her eyes between you both, “a daddy is supposed to look after a mummy too, and the only person who has ever looked after mummy is you Joongki.”
His expression immediately softened at her reply, briefly glancing across at you as you weakly smiled in reply, feeling your heart beat a little faster in your chest at your daughter’s kind words.
The importance that Joongki carried with him was something that your daughter was always aware of. Whenever the two of you encountered a problem, it was Joongki that you caught, if you ever found yourself getting upset then it would be Joongki who you would turn to for advice, and who would usually stop by to check up on you too.
“Your mummy has an army of people who absolutely adore her, not just me Y/D/N.”
“But you’re her favourite,” she smiled, “and you’re my favourite too.”
She continued to melt Joongki’s heart as she spoke, knowing all of the right things to try and get her way and get Joongki to read her a story. Despite this, every word that she said was heartfelt and true, she might be young, but she certainly knew that although Joongki wasn’t family, he was the closest thing to it for you both.
“Why can’t you read me a story Joongki? Because you’re scared of upsetting my daddy?”
“Your daddy means nothing to me, he’s not a nice man,” Joongki assured her, “but your family has always been you and your mummy, and if your school says you should get your mum and dad to read you stories, then I think mummy should read you another one tonight.”
Whilst the two of them continued to exchange back and forth, you remained stood in the doorway watching it all unfold. Joongki had a way with words that was so sincere each and every time that he spoke. You were thankful for the approach that he took with her, knowing that he was able to explain things to her a lot better than you ever could.
“I want a nice man to be my daddy, someone like you Joongki.”
For once, Joongki went silent as your daughter spoke, averting his eyes to stare down at the floor. When he didn’t speak, your daughter leaned down and tapped her index finger into the back of Joongki’s hand to get his attention.
“If you’re dating my mummy, and looking after me, isn’t that what a daddy is supposed to do?” She asked him. “I don’t want my daddy to be someone that ran away from me, I want him to be someone who is there for me, and for mummy too.”
“Are you really sure that’s what you want Y/D/N?”
Her head immediately nodded in response, allowing her smile to grow. Joongki had always been as good as a dad to her, and despite her age, your daughter was well aware of that too, knowing that Joongki had always stepped up to the mark.
“If you want to call me dad, I would love that,” Joongki smiled back across at her.
Her eyes lit up at his response, sitting herself up properly on the bed. “If you’re going to be my daddy from now on, does that mean you can finally read me a story? Is that alright mum?”
“Of course,” you proudly grinned back at the two of them as they both glanced across at you. “If you’re sure that you want to start calling Joongki dad, then it’s only right that he reads the bedtime story tonight, isn’t it?”
“I know exactly what book I want you to read me too,” she encouraged in Joongki’s direction, “the one that you bought me for my birthday, I’ve not read it yet.”
You slowly walked into the room and towards her bookcase, looking through for the book that you knew she wanted. “I can’t believe you’ve not read that book yet,” Joongki joked, “I bought you that book weeks ago.”
“Maybe I was saving it for a special occasion,” she teased in reply, “I knew that mummy wouldn’t be able to read it like you could.”
His eyes rolled at how sharp she was, taking the book from you as you passed it across. “You really are the spitting image of your mother sometimes; do you know that?”
“We’re both troublemakers,” she proudly retorted to him.
“You both definitely are trouble.”
