The cut feed meant the bitter relief of someone finishing the task he'd failed. Losing his sense of direction, having no working internal clock, and realizing he isn't as suicidal as he'd thought had been enough to tempt Gurathin into... What?

(SecUnit is running improvised modules. It's discovering it's capable of more than pain. And it's finding out how hard it is to save what you want to keep when it comes to company rules.)

Summary:

Distantly, Gurathin remembered the union snipers on the upper floors, the drone clouds they'd all coded in case of emergency. The dull ache of his body, sharper on the side of his head, was fighting the painkillers he'd gotten loaded on beforehand. His feed was a panorama of warnings and the empty boxes of blocked ads. He was cannon fodder with no actual conviction, an indentured systems engineer with expensive augments. The SecUnit advancing over his sprawled shape hadn't come for him - Not really.

What were they doing to themselves? Maybe delusion and self-sabotage were the only things SecUnit and Gurathin could control: Selfish as hell, but clawing back some measure of dignity through this simulacrum of choice —  Like the storage room would keep the world at bay. They aren't fit to be anyone’s shelter.

Summary:

Something glinted the SecUnit's retinae, blue on blue. Something about it looked far younger than the aesthetics of its cloned tissue, and the pang of realization was bitter, low down Gurathin's throat. The storage room they were in barely registered. This wasn't a failure, it was a total collapse thirty-six years in the making — Leaving a headcount well into the hundreds. Philosophy in Company Rules

So the outcome might not change, regardless of what I do, but that's no reason for me to not try my very best. If nothing else, my efforts might impact others and I will still have the satisfaction of knowing that I was not defeated by fear. I fought it with every fiber of my being and if I still fail it will not be because I fled, giving in to despair. Don't tell me to accept the evils of this world because "one person can not change them." If one person can do nothing alone, then all they must do to win is join others. Instead of succumbing to apathy, following the flow like an animal sent to be slaughtered, why don't you try living?
