Ordered an open box return unit from Scandinavian Photo, so that was the equivalent of $60. Not too bad, and under half the price of the cheapest equivalent model from Elgato that I could find in this country.

OpenDeck will also work on Windows and MacOS, but the Ulanzi and Ajazz support plugins that I can see offhand are currently Linux only. The Ulanzi plugin devs do plan to add both Windows and Mac support. The need on Linux was just more pressing, with none of the manufacturers doing it.

I do plan to use the deck to make some streaming things easier, but they're not only good for streamers.

What you get is a physical button pad (13 buttons, in this case) that you can set up to easily do pretty much whatever you like on your computer. Launch different programs, control volume for different things, send specific commands, set timers and alarms, you name it. You want physical volume buttons for your media players, or to mute/unmute your mic? It's simple to do that. You want a button pad to play Cookie Clicker on? There is actually a plugin for that. You get the idea.

And AFAICT OpenDeck will let you keep multiple saved layouts to use for different things. It also supports pretty much all the Elgato plugins. (Missing a couple on Linux, apparently because their devs have some kind of beef and the one plugin guy purposely made things difficult. No direct Twitch integration for us. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)

(You can also do more complicated shit, if you want to. I still need to figure out how to properly set up API calls to do shit through Streamer.bot. Because that is the easiest way I can figure out to do things like trigger sending a specific message to chat at the press of a button--since actual Twitch integration is out on Linux. 😒)

Also from the OpenDeck dev, but not actually open source itself because they decided to sell a pro version. I've been messing with that (free tier), and it is pretty cool. You get 6 buttons to work with on Tacto Mobile, and it communicates with OpenDeck over your local network.

Main problem is the phone app has been periodically disconnecting from OpenDeck and needs to reconnect while I'm trying to use it. It also ties up a phone or tablet while you're streaming, if that is your intended use case. My cheap ass also runs DroidCam on the same phone for my stream camera (great quality for the like $15 Pro license!), so that's sort of a problem.

I also kinda wanted more buttons to work with, so a cheapish physical button pad seemed like a reasonable entertainment investment. But, you can totally mess around with phone/tablet remote control without paying a dime.

AI Is Eating Data Center Power Demand—and It’s Only Getting Worse

A new analysis of AI hardware being produced and how it is being used attempts to estimate the vast amount of electricity being consumed by

AI’s energy use already represents as much as 20 percent of global data-center power demand, research published Thursday in the journal Joule shows. That demand from AI, the research states, could double by the end of this year, comprising nearly half of all total data-center electricity consumption worldwide, excluding the electricity used for bitcoin mining.

The new research is published in a commentary by Alex de Vries-Gao, the founder of Digiconomist, a research company that evaluates the environmental impact of technology. De Vries-Gao started Digiconomist in the late 2010s to explore the impact of bitcoin mining, another extremely energy-intensive activity, would have on the environment. Looking at AI, he says, has grown more urgent over the past few years because of the widespread adoption of ChatGPT and other large language models that use massive amounts of energy. According to his research, worldwide AI energy demand is now set to surpass demand from bitcoin mining by the end of this year.

“The money that bitcoin miners had to get to where they are today is peanuts compared to the money that Google and Microsoft and all these big tech companies are pouring in [to AI],” he says. “This is just escalating a lot faster, and it’s a much bigger threat.”

The development of AI is already having an impact on Big Tech’s climate goals. Tech giants have acknowledged in recent sustainability reports that AI is largely responsible for driving up their energy use. Google’s greenhouse gas emissions, for instance, have increased 48 percent since 2019, complicating the company’s goals of reaching net zero by 2030.

“As we further integrate AI into our products, reducing emissions may be challenging due to increasing energy demands from the greater intensity of AI compute,” Google’s 2024 sustainability report reads.

Last month, the International Energy Agency released a report finding that data centers made up 1.5 percent of global energy use in 2024—around 415 terrawatt-hours, a little less than the yearly energy demand of Saudi Arabia. This number is only set to get bigger: Data centers’ electricity consumption has grown four times faster than overall consumption in recent years, while the amount of investment in data centers has nearly doubled since 2022, driven largely by massive expansions to account for new AI capacity. Overall, the IEA predicted that data center electricity consumption will grow to more than 900 TWh by the end of the decade.

But there’s still a lot of unknowns about the share that AI, specifically, takes up in that current configuration of electricity use by data centers. Data centers power a variety of services—like hosting cloud services and providing online infrastructure—that aren’t necessarily linked to the energy-intensive activities of AI. Tech companies, meanwhile, largely keep the energy expenditure of their software and hardware private.

Some attempts to quantify AI’s energy consumption have started from the user side: calculating the amount of electricity that goes into a single ChatGPT search, for instance. De Vries-Gao decided to look, instead, at the supply chain, starting from the production side to get a more global picture.

The high computing demands of AI, De Vries-Gao says, creates a natural “bottleneck” in the current global supply chain around AI hardware, particularly around the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the undisputed leader in producing key hardware that can handle these needs. Companies like Nvidia outsource the production of their chips to TSMC, which also produces chips for other companies like Google and AMD. (Both TSMC and Nvidia declined to comment for this article.)

De Vries-Gao used analyst estimates, earnings call transcripts, and device details to put together an approximate estimate of TSMC’s production capacity. He then looked at publicly available electricity consumption profiles of AI hardware and estimates on utilization rates of that hardware—which can vary based on what it’s being used for—to arrive at a rough figure of just how much of global data-center demand is taken up by AI. De Vries-Gao calculates that without increased production, AI will consume up to 82 terrawatt-hours of electricity this year—roughly around the same as the annual electricity consumption of a country like Switzerland. If production capacity for AI hardware doubles this year, as analysts have projected it will, demand could increase at a similar rate, representing almost half of all data center demand by the end of the year.

Despite the amount of publicly available information used in the paper, a lot of what De Vries-Gao is doing is peering into a black box: We simply don’t know certain factors that affect AI’s energy consumption, like the utilization rates of every piece of AI hardware in the world or what machine learning activities they’re being used for, let alone how the industry might develop in the future.

Sasha Luccioni, an AI and energy researcher and the climate lead at open-source machine-learning platform Hugging Face, cautioned about leaning too hard on some of the conclusions of the new paper, given the amount of unknowns at play. Luccioni, who was not involved in this research, says that when it comes to truly calculating AI’s energy use, disclosure from tech giants is crucial.

“It’s because we don’t have the information that [researchers] have to do this,” she says. “That’s why the error bar is so huge.”

And tech companies do keep this information. In 2022, Google published a paper on machine learning and electricity use, noting that machine learning was “10%–15% of Google’s total energy use” from 2019 to 2021, and predicted that with best practices, “by 2030 total carbon emissions from training will reduce.” However, since that paper—which was released before Google Gemini’s debut in 2023—Google has not provided any more detailed information about how much electricity ML uses. (Google declined to comment for this story.)

“You really have to deep-dive into the semiconductor supply chain to be able to make any sensible statement about the energy demand of AI,” De Vries-Gao says. “If these big tech companies were just publishing the same information that Google was publishing three years ago, we would have a pretty good indicator” of AI’s energy use.

Ok so, everyone should switch to linux - note this is a long post, basically it is free, easy, super customisable, privacy friendly, has many different versions (ubuntu is really easy, linux mint is super beginner friendly, as is garuda linux and pop OS), and you can now play most games on it! Some games like Cyberpunk 2077 even can have performance boosts! And, you can customise EVERYTHING. Oh and it is free and you wont have to ever pay to switch versions or update it, and you can do stuff and game while it is updating.

Heres my definitelyyyy unbiased half hearted attempt to convince you (VERY LONG slightly off topic rant):

First, what is an operating system (the number of people I have endured who dont even know this) - "An Operating System is a System software that manages all the resources of the computing device. " (geeksforgeeks). So think of it like the backbone that lets you use the hardware and software and lets software use and run on your hardware, it has many components such as an init system, a kernel, and many other bits and pieces that you dont really need to know about for me to get my point across. Some operating systems you will likely have used in your day-to-day are Android (which is FOSS - free and open source software) made by google and some other developers and then customised per manufacturer (of devices such as phones and tablets) to contain a set of default applocations and to lock down/integrate advertising elements into/ work with said manufacturers devices, it is actually based on the Linux Kernel (a kernel is like the skeleton structure on which the flesh of a operating system is layered), but is a separate fork (branch). There is also Orbis Os, most of you wont have heard of it but if you have ever used a playstation 4 that is the operating system, it is based on FreeBSD (like linux but different), this OS (operating system) is "closed source" meaning that you cant see inside the magic box to see how it works, in contrast to FOSS (free open source software) where you can, and you can even make your own branch off of it and customise it however you like. Another is Windows (11, 10, 7, XP, etc.). I fucking hate Microwosoft Binbows. It is terrible for privacy, treats its users like idiots, disallows you the freedom to customise as you wish, is incredibly vulnerable to "hackers", has a large attack surface, takes up way more space on your system than any linux based system, and also it costs money and is terribly optimised. But if you are unconvinced at least run a script from privacy(.)sexy to harden/ clean up your winbows system and deal with some of the privacy violations.

Examples of why Windows SUCKS: you might of heard of windows recall being a thing on windows 11, basically that PIECE OF FLAMING SHIT IDEA screenshots LITERALLY EVERYTHING YOU DO on your computer, the data extracted from those is marketed as helping you not lose your place as to what you were up to. The thing is there is already application and browsing history built in, so it literally does nothing useful that isnt already accounted for; the data is stored within a local database that is decrypted when your device is powered on, not when you have unlocked it with a password, BUT WHEN THE FUCKING POWER FOR THE SYSTEM IS ON. Personally I dont know many people who shutdown their systems overnight. The reason this is bad aside from the obvious ones is that it does not redact sensitive information extracted - so your passwords, banking information, webcam, porn viewing, umm what else do people consider sensitive hmmm oh yeah your emails such as those for work which may be covered under NDAs - and this information IS SITTING DECRYPTED ON YOUR SYSTEM and is a super easy target for any hacker, malware, automated or not. You might think "oh im not a target" okay enjoy getting your savings stolen. Enjoy being watched. Oh and if the pigs (cops) get their filthy hands on your device, that information is easily extracted without your consent. This is especially important to consider when you see how authoritarian and fascist leaning the global political landscape has become again. OK NEXT EXAMPLE OF WHY WINDOWS SUCKS ASS: microsoft automatically enables folder backups to OneDrive (so, their servers, that data is able to be accessed by them) without ever asking you for your consent. IT VIOLATES YOU. And, again, that could be used against you even if it is all above board. What is legal now might not always be legal or "morally acceptable", to bigots a fag like me existing in public can be considered "violent" or "adult content" or illegal.

OK ANOTHER EXAMPLE: Cortana - most of you have seen it, if you use it fuck you, you are an idiot. Cortana has built in unique identifiers (UUIDs) including advertising ID which enables, AGAIN WITHOUT YOUR CONSENT, correlation of usage and usage patterns when interacting with it and even when not, for advertisers and data brokers to use and sell to others for targeted advertising. This may sound innocuous, but that targeted advertising can be anything from political campaigns (targeted LIES) to making sure you see news media that gets you to click, generally this tends to lean towards the extreme side of things. As a general rule the more extreme or outrageous, the more people at least look at it. Alongside advertisers, that data from cortana is also sent directly to Microsoft.

Setting the default browser always to Edge, or reverting to Edge if it's changed.

Adding cloud-based "AI" (aka stealy mcstealy face crap tech masquerading as actual AI) features to many areas in Windows and various Microsoft Apps.

Unnecessarily storing sensitive data. Even data which is stored locally and not sent to Microsoft is still a target for hackers or malware on your device.

For now I am done getting mad that windows exists FOR NOW. Lets move on to Apple, MacOS and IOS.

First of all - it is locked to apples system of devices - which are overpriced and genuinely shit. Which Linux isnt. There is generally, regardless of the device, A PRIVACY RESPECTING linux based Operating System you can INSTALL FOR FREE.

While overall Apple devices are slightly better for privacy than the Android systems primed for harvesting your data that come on nearly all phones (which can often be swapped out for more privacy respecting alternatives, such as Graphene OS). iOS forces you to have an internet connection for setup of ALL devices (not required by graphene OS or Linux). The only source of apps or packages (pkgs) on iOS is the Apple App Store, which is yet another part of their forced closed software/hardware ecosystem, meaning Apple has a record of EVERY single program you install on your device and can directly tie that information to your real identity, even if you dont give Apple a payment method. Apple is dogshit when it comes to telemetry - they just DONT disassociate the telemetry from Apple Accounts on iOS AT ALL meaning it is directly tracking to your real identity, demographics, etc. "In 2019, Apple was found to transmit Siri recordings—some containing highly confidential information—to their servers for manual review by third-party contractors." WITHOUT USER CONSENT they are literally listening to what you SAY. Those cunts have also been found to send your data in the form of analytics even WHEN YOUVE OPTED OUT, directly violating YOUR CONSENT. Think of it this way ARE YOU HAPPY TO HAVE AN UNACCOUNTABLE CORPORATION VIOLATE YOU AND TRACK YOU and then to sell EVERYTHING to THOUSANDS of businesses and even governments and political campaigns without EVER ASKING YOU, and you as part of a modern technocratic society are forced to be in ANY compromising position that could be even the slightest bit profitable FOR THE ENTIRETY OF YOUR LIFE as this fucking technology is NEVER GOING AWAY. With Linux and FOS Software you are not forced vicious dichotomy of endless mass surveilled consumerism, ISOLATED if you dont have access, either by choice or financial situation, to a device. How many times have you been to a restraunt where they no longer have ANY physical menus or you are forced to order online, where you have been required to "check in" via stupid fucking qr codes (which btw are super vulnerable and a great attack vector, get infected with malware fuckwit) and if you have for whatever reason not had a phone on you (I know, unthinkable in this day and age OH WAIT YOU ARE JUST HAVE NEVER BEEN IN SUCH DIRE FINANCIAL STRAITS AS TO NOT BE ABLE TO HAVE ONE) you simply have been denied access directly or indirectly. Apple forces some traffic outside of any active vpn thereby defeating even using one. Oh and then there is iCloud. Fuck i hate iCloud. Everything you put in there is public information.

NOW ONTO MAC OS.

mac FUCKING SUCKS, but at least it isnt windows. At least you can disable (painfully for normies) telemetry and harden the existing privacy/sec settings. Recovering or resetting your Mac forces connection to Apple's servers. They track every app you open as well and log it upon their servers. There is no option to opt out of this. Also it has a ton of vulnerabilities. "When you use Apple services like iCloud, most of your information is stored on their servers and secured with keys which Apple has access to by default. This is called Standard Data Protection by Apple." (source). Also it forces use of an Apple Account similar to Windows forcing a Microsoft Account which is fucking stupid. Oh and its dogshit just in general and gives you little (still better than windows) control over your system on a lower level. Also there have been MANY macOS supply chain attacks in the past.

ok so I was going to write more about privacy on devices in general and google being dogshit (SWITCH TO WATERFOX, set the search engine to duckduckgo or startpage, this is waterfox based, use a password manager such as bitwarden or keepass) but backto why you should switch to linux.

YOU CAN PLAY MINECRAFT ON LINUX

Piracy is easier - look into qbittorent enhanced and search extensions which enable you to search for torrents safely without having to go look them up online, AND IT HAS DARK MODE, also it supports torrenting over i2p for increased privacy. You can either emulate using lutris to run stuff like Dodi and Fitgirl repacks, or you can use john cena 141 stuff (follow the guide). Also key terms/programs: Proton, Proton GE, Wine, Lutris, Bottles, 1337x(.)to (use ad blockers etc).

And most malware isnt aimed at it, linux based systems are more secure by default, a lot dont require the use of the terminal anymore at all, also it can help extend the effective lifespan of older devices.

PLAN FOR THE WORST HOPE FOR THE BEST, just because there is less aimed at it doesnt mean there are no threats.

Can you game on Linux? Yes! Most games are now supported either directly or via a compatibility layer as is provided by default with steam, steam decks are linux as well btw (a bastardised version, but still linux)

oh yeah and most linux distributions have either apparmor or seLinux as a default low level security mechanism alongside the nftables or iptables standard firewall (which do need to be configured, such as adding in blocklists), for internet most use network manager but personnally I reccomend iwd and connman and adding to the main firewall opensnitch (application firewall) and integrating grafana and loki and suricata or logsense. All of this is relatively easy to set up.

oh and on arch linux - WHAT I USE (with hyprland and a custom compiled self hardened kernel I spent too long tuning) there are a lot of fun programs such as lobster and nyaa and yt-x which let you search for and watch torrents from the terminal of your favourite animes, tv shows, youtube videos, and movies.

Also for gaming - heroic games launcher, lutris, and bottles if you really want

Distro list for noobs - im so tired from writing this in like 40 minutes i didnt intend to rant like this -

Linux Mint (I liked it the few times ive used it and set it up for others, very gentle intro to linux, is stable, is hard to break accidentally, perfect for beginners)

Zorin OS (very similar to windows in feel) (never tried it I cant comment on this)

elementary OS (very similar to macos in feel) (never tried it I cant comment on this)

if you want to learn basic cybersecurity or pretend to be le epique haxor - Kali Linux - there are tons of tutorials, I do not reccomend it for daily drive, better for running inside virtualbox for learning, dont mess with the repo configs it will break

Manjaro - better version of linux mint, arch based meaning its just BETTER AND THEN YOU CAN FLEX AND SAY "I use arch, btw" - note I am very biased about arch just for the memes

popOS! - okay for gaming I guess

garuda linux - okay for gaming as well, good for beefy systems especially those with amd gpus

Lakka OS - for if you want to use an old pc for running retro games

Archcraft, Arch, CentOs, Endeavour Os - Good, I like them, bit of a learning curve
