I watched Conan the Barbarian (2011) today. 7.5/10, C. While more faithful to the pulps than 82, it's basically a worse movie in every single way, and only my own meatheaded appreciation for mindless violence saves it from a worse score.
It's a very grey and brown movie, the editing is super choppy - during the final confrontation with the lame ass villain, I swear there were so many fucking cuts I had to look away from the screen. The plot is very lame and generic, no one really feels wholly invested in this movie's story and I don't blame them. But again, there are a lot of scenes where guys get their heads cracked open, so who can say if this movie is irredeemable or not.
Leo Howard is probably my personal favorite on-screen Conan - the scene where he defiantly strides up to his father (Ron Perlman phoning it in for a quick check), holding the skulls of three or four Picts, covered in blood, staring him in the eyes - that's one of the most characteristic things Conan does in this movie. I had to Google his name just out of respect for that moment. Loved it.
Momoa's not really playing Conan (but then again neither was Schwarzenegger) - there's a party scene at the beginning of his entry into the movie where he's just playing Jason Momoa lmfao, it feels nothing like Conan. If he were playing generic sword and sorcery guy, I wouldn't really have much of an issue with him, but he's playing *the* Conan.
He gets a few moments where his actions feel like book Conan - the killing of the noseless guy, for one, where he claims Tamara as his property in front of the other henchman, for better or for worse, those specific instances felt to me like they came from the pulps.
Speaking of coming from the pulps - the portrayal of the Picts (?) is insanely racist in this lmfao. They're guys dressed like Hollywood Native Americans, like in the pulps, but they also have filed teeth and growl like animals. Incredible this released in 2011, this is the type of shit Robert E Howard would have gone 'I dunno, seems a bit much' at lol. Heartwarming: Conan the Barbarian stories remain racist even in the modern day!!!!1 /s
Could not have cared less about the villains and the overall plot of the movie. Hollywood's insistence on giving Conan a tragic childhood backstory and a big villain to hunt remains ridiculous to me, and Stephen Lang doesn't have James Earl Jones' screen presence.
It's not worth watching - it's kind of sad that this movie is probably objectively one of the better gore-y R-rated fantasy movies we've gotten, because it's not very good and it's regularly dull. But at least some people die gruesomely and inventively.
kelse: I’ve never really been into Conan

Jason Momoa talks Conan
The new-look Conan The Barbarian doesn't thunder onto our screens for a few months yet, but the man who plays Cimmeria's sword swinger, Jason Momoa, is already on the campaign trail. He's here to win over the masses for his take on the character Arnie owned back in 1982. Looking at the man, realistically who's going to argue?
Despite boasting pecs the size of Canvey Island and biceps that look more like CGI-ceps, Momoa promises an altogether lither, speedier hero than Arnie's beefcake. "We wanted to make him nimble," Momoa told Empire, "[because] he's a product of his environment. He's not out there lifting boulders..."
Expect swordplay influenced by Toshiro Mifune in Kurosawa's samurai movies, says Momoa, movement like a panther and bloody Apocalypto-style combat, a movie director Marcus Nispel cites as an influence.
And what of the dark arts that run through Robert E. Howard's source material? "There's a lot of magic and sorcery in the Conan stories but they wanted to steer clear [of including] too much of that because of Clash Of The Titans. They have a little bit of the sorcery in there with Marique (Rose McGowan) but I'm sure in Conan 2 and 3 there's going to be a lot more of that."
So a second and third outing for the new-look Conan look like a cert if Conan The Barbarian brings home the bacon. First though is the small matter of avenging his scorched village and vanquishing evil warlord Khalar Zym (Stephen Lang). Conan The Barbarian rolls into cinemas on August 26 in serpent-smiting 3D.

New Conan the Barbarian Trailer
Looks promising. Certain elements are clearly reminiscent of the original, the serpent, the horse abuse. Looks like Stephen Lang has delivered another fearsome, scenery chewing villain. Not keen on the heavy 300 ish score, but that's probably since we're so attached to the original's theme music.
What do you guys think? Let us know.
