I bought a new game.

#conception 2 #conception ii #conception ii children of the seven stars #conception ds #it only cost me 20$ and I need more rpgs for my ds that aren't pokemon #i have this. tales of abyss. the smt games. persona q2. ever oasis and technically the bravely default games but there is just #so much grinding. I've been playing that game for YEARS. everything else is pretty much just some sort of pokemon #or pokemon offshoot most of which I have beaten (can replay them still of course but) and not rpgs. maybe something here and there #im forgetting about or rune factory but. I need more for my ds but I can't buy the expensive games yet #if I could I would have dragon quest already among other things

There was this game I played a few years ago, Conception 2: Children of the Seven Stars, and thinking back on it, it might be the weirdest JRPG I’ve played.

Like... on the surface it’s a sleazy harem game, where you go to this new school and find out you’re the most important guy ever (they literally call you God’s Gift), and you have to magically create ‘Star Children’ to be child soldiers and go into dungeons to fight alongside you and one of the seven girls you create the kids with through something called the ‘Classmating’ ritual, which is definitely not a metaphor for anything. And the school you go to is shaped like a giant dick.

So you meet all the girls and they’re mostly harem cliches (tsundere, genki girl, girl next door, etc.) and you get to know them. Some of them have wild backstories. And you do the Classmating ritual.

Which is when you find out that this game is, like... weirdly (for the genre) focused on the important of consent and communication. At certain intervals, you have to do these little interludes where you talk to the girls about Classmating. Do they enjoy it? Do they still want to do it, are they comfortable? What if we did this instead? Oh, you’ve done some research and think this would make it more pleasurable for you?

By doing this, you can create stronger Star Children and progress your relationships. Like, the big theme of the game appears to be ‘healthy communication and discussed, enthusiastic consent makes you and your relationships stronger’. It’s incredibly refreshing for a game in this genre. Everything is building up to the big school festival where you go on a date with the girl you choose as your endgame.

And then the twist villain gains political power. Six major characters die. Most of the cast are traumatised. The end
