“ LEAVE IT! ”  footsteps crashed through underbrush, rather loud announcement of swiftly approaching duo. four legged beast in the lead bounded further && further from trail, every so often glancing, mid - stride, over shoulder && back towards confused researcher trailing in dead sprint. mightyena had NEVER taken off from group in such clear path. just what was he after? it had to be some sort of living creature, right? or . . . oh, god.

maxie dug heels into dirt, attempt to stop in his tracks nearly sending him tumbling. he caught himself against nearby tree, eyes wide behind fingerprint - laden lenses. he swallowed hard. he could have sworn thought caused heart to hammer harder in momentary panic, but perhaps that was from extended run through dense forest. fingertips pressed firmly to bark, grounding action that helped man start to calm. of course, as mightyena looped back around && took trainer’s shirt between jaws, tugging him again en route to whatever had captured his interest, brief calm went right out the window.

“ fine, fine- ” maxie began, waving hand by companion’s snout in hopes he’d let go. he did, though only once they neared what he sought. researcher cleared throat, watching pokémon disappear into bushes. “ is . . . are you all right? ” he spoke to nobody in particular, words lingering in air for whoever may hear. with deep breath, he followed mightyena, praying to whatever would listen that he’d not find corpse just ahead.
