How do you assess Regulus’ relationship with Kreatcher?

It is the most interesting aspect of his character to me

I don't read Regulus as someone who thought of Kreacher as an equal. He was raised in the Black family; the idea that house-elves exist to serve wizarding families was probably completely normal to him. But I do think he genuinely cared about Kreacher and probably considered him part of the family in his own way. And those two things aren't necessarily contradictory. Regulus can love Kreacher, trust him, worry about him, and still fundamentally believe that Kreacher's place is as a servant.

That's what makes the relationship much more interesting than simply “Regulus was nice to his house-elf.” It's more like personal affection existing within a deeply unequal social structure. You can genuinely love someone and still not question the system that puts them beneath you. I think that's very relevant to Regulus because I don't think his eventual rejection of Voldemort means he suddenly became ideologically progressive about everything. He was still a product of the Black family and its worldview.

And Kreacher's attachment to him makes perfect sense in that context. Regulus was probably one of the people Kreacher had known most intimately his entire life. He'd have been there throughout Regulus's childhood, his daily routines, his relationship with his parents, Sirius leaving, Hogwarts, everything. If Regulus treated him with affection and dignity within the boundaries of their relationship, that could have meant an enormous amount to Kreacher.

Which is why the cave scene hits so hard. Regulus trusts Kreacher with something incredibly important, but he also explicitly makes sure that Kreacher survives. And Kreacher spends the rest of his life carrying out Regulus's final wishes and remembering him with this extraordinary devotion.

So yeah, I think their relationship is fascinating precisely because Regulus can genuinely love Kreacher without that love magically making him egalitarian. If anything, that contradiction makes him feel much more like an actual product of his environment rather than fandom's tendency to turn him into a secretly perfect little revolutionary. He can be deeply affectionate, deeply classist, genuinely loyal, and morally conflicted all at once.

The problem of why I think no fancast will ever be exactly how I imagine Sirius and Regulus is because they will never have those striking blueish-grey eyes that the Black brothers have. Those eyes that peer into your soul and make you beg them to buy brown contacts just for your own sanity.
