Today, our featured poet Jeannine A. Cook (owner of @harrietts_bookshop) lived many a poet’s dream when she arrived at the gig riding a horse! All heads turned and smiles broadened across their face to see Jeannine arrive in the company of @fletcherstreeturbanridingclub (an inspiration for the Netflix film #ConcreteCowboy, released earlier this year starring @idriselba) It was another incredible day for @westphillycommunitypoem at our #EverydayPlacesWestPHL partner @lapearlbeauty. And I got to say, I never stop being absolutely blown away to be a part of the inspiring poetry scene alive today in Philadelphia. Growing up, I was always attracted by the mystique of so many artists before my time and the spectacle they brought to every occasion. Those same kinds of figures are alive in our city today. And you don’t want to miss your chance at seeing them. This story shouldn’t overshadow the incredible writing and community organizing of our other featured poet, Christopher KP Brown (@kpsince1984). A legend himself in the extent of community his weekly poetry series “Pecola Breedlove & the Freedom Party” brought to West Philadelphia over the years. So many voices found their audience and empowerment in that room. It was such an honor to share mindspace today with both of these heroic poets. Beyond offering a platform for the neighborhood to voice its dreams and memories, the hope for @westphillycommunitypoem was definitely to reflect back on the community all the power in our individual talents and ways of being. It’s been such a blast getting to meet so many neighbors and share conversations about the direction of the neighborhood. Moments like these I hope are memories in themselves that reinforce why our shared time here is so special. There’s been conversations too about the rapid changes that are happening all around the city. Even @fletcherstreeturbanridingclub has been the victim of developers taking and resettling the land for construction (their GoFundMe to get back some sovereignty is linked on their profile). These are moments we record in poems on the community scroll with the hopes that the words sustain them deep into the future.
