I’m from southern California and way back when in the 90s when or before many Tumblr people were born, many didn’t know what specific not-American foods were.
There’s a supermarket chain called 99 Ranch, and the one near my family was between areas with high Latino and Chinese populations. Pretty normal for a Chinese market, and I think this still holds true for SoCal.
They printed food labels in Chinese and English, and the greatest label I have ever seen was for zongzhi: Chinese Tamales.
