Carlo Antonio R. Batac | 11-STEM 6 CIRCLE (Packaging Tape) - My example for circle is a packaging tape. It is formed this way so it can be easy to use and the object will maintain its smoothness. With its shape, users won’t find it hard in looking for the tip/end of the said item. Also, finding a spot to keep it won’t be difficult for the fact that it is portable and it can be hung on certain things like nails mounted on study tables or walls. On the other hand, it is not made in other shapes because companies making these types of products usually follow the old idea and style of creating it. Finally, tapes are necessarily shaped like this so people won’t have difficulties in using it like unsticking and untangling a side from the other.
ELLIPSE (Medicine Capsules) - As for ellipse, I used medicine capsules as an example. These medications are formed like this, so consumers can take it with the proper/right amount of substance. Coating/shaping the medications to an ellipse shape will help the person taking it swallow with ease. If these things were created in shapes with edges, I don’t think it would be safe nor would it be easy for anyone to consume/drink it. It is meant to be formed and shaped like this because experts say that it is the best way of avoiding risks and mistakes in taking medication.
PARABOLA (Padlock Shackle) - For this conic section, I used a padlock shackle as an example. The said item is formed like a parabola, because the shape of it is more efficient in functioning as a primary connecting link to lock stuff together. With its reversed “U” form or shape, it is easier for portable locks to secure the things locked and stuck with it. On the other hand, padlock shackles can be formed into other shapes like square or circle, but almost all of the companies create it with the form of a parabola and as a result, the majority follows and make copies of the concept. Overall, it is meant to be formed like this in order to fulfil the purpose of a padlock easier and efficiently.
HYPERBOLA (Plastic Soda Bottle) - The item that I used to present as an example for hyperbola is a large plastic soda bottle. It can be said that it is shaped like this so people won’t think about the tendency of the container slipping from their hands. With the shape of the bottle, it can help the consumers have a better grip and avoid spillage. On the other hand, if it is not shaped like this, one may find it hard in holding it and the chances of dropping the product are high. My guess on why it is necessarily made like this is because the company may have wanted something more distinct for their product compared to others.
