Conlig (Bangor)
New post on Townlands of Ulster, from Conlig townland near Bangor. #townlands #Clandeboye #irishancestry
Today’s townland is Conlig, near Bangor. Do you remember the lake from my post from Ballyvarnet townland? After the lake, I walked on along the Clandeboye Way, under a sun-dotted canopy of leaves and ferns, into Conlig townland. I liked this old wooden sign from the path through Conlig, even though it’s no longer accurate. The Ulster Way still exists as a long-distance circular walking trail,…

Whitespots
Whitespots doesn't sound very Irish, does it? Blog update from the townland of mining, soldiers and piglets. #townlands #newtownards
Whitespots is a large townland in County Down. It has a completely English name, which cannot have been the original one. According to the PLACENAMESNI website, the older Irish name was Ceathrú Chamchoise meaning “crooked-leg quarter”, perhaps connected to a river called Alchamcoiss.  The name Whitespots, first recorded in 1675, may have been imported from Scotland. I knew this scene looked familiar! This is a couple of miles from where I live - I can actually see the tower from my bedroom. Yes, it was a windmill on real life - it was part of a lead mining system and the two chimneys are not seen in the series, despite being very obvious and very close to the windmill. There are red deer there, too - I almost walked into a doe while walking a shelter dog there. She was going across the path in front of me, and froze before the trees - when she saw me and the curious dog, she bolted into the trees. That spot, despite being a disused lead mine with some uncovered and unfound mine shafts, is very popular with dog walkers, motocross enthusiasts, mountain bikers and walkers. There is a golf course right beside it - you can walk from a natural setting into a man made environment, by crossing a broken fence. I spent some of my childhood running about there, and have recently taken friends up there to walk dogs and/or take pictures. It's beautiful, and climbing along the rocks makes everything better!
