The fledgling UK bass label Connected Dots sets the mood for things to come with a compelling left turn from the flexing dubstep heavyweight Matta. The sounds contained on the three track EP are a leap away from the metallurgic tweakery and triplet hammering more typical of Matta’s output on Biscuit Factory, Chateau Bruyant, and other stalwart dubstep imprints. In the absence of mutating bass lines a bevy of production details come to the fore, filling up the space atop the familiar low frequency pressure with glassy atmospherics, burbling vocalizations, and the stray acoustic rustling. The underlying techno/garage beats get the job done though perhaps overly finessed to the point of disappearing into the background. Overall Can’t You See is a welcome take on 130bpm bass music of a more Drum and Bass inflected cut than that seen on Four40, Tumble Audio or the like.
