Connecticut Field Pumpkin has arranged its seeds so artfully. I wonder if they are enclosed this way because it requires tiny pumpkin invaders to really work hard to get to each pocket of seeds? This is an heirloom variety was traditionally grown in corn fields (as was my crop) and was given to European settlers in New England before 1700. It is now used for autumn decorations as well as cooking. Connecticut Field Pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo) is a classic pumpkin, and is apparently very similar to pre-Columbian squash. I am growing them amongst Sehsapsing Corn, as it is a variety traditionally grown in corn fields. Connecticut Field Pumpkin fruit in its own leaf shadows. I guess this is the early stages of pregnancy - the green, fertilized ovary is getting larger and its seeds are surely thin and perhaps translucent like you find in a green zucchini. Soon it will reach full size and turn orange, and its seeds will fatten and turn white, filled with the recipe and spark for building the next sprawling and vigorous sunlight gobbler. #cucurbitapepo #connecticutfieldpumpkin #pumpkin (at Newtown Square, Pennsylvania)
