#2.Jaws-Just A Boy.
Artist Overview
Jaws
Jaws are an indie-pop band formed in Birmingham, England in 2012 after lead singer Connor Schofield posted a demo online which received enough positive feedback to encourage him to start a band with his college friends ; Alex Hudson (rhythm guitar), Eddy Geach (Drums) and Jake Cooper (Bass guitar). The quartet from Digbeth, who have been hotly tipped for a bright future and have drawn comparisons to bands such as; 'Foals' and 'The Maccabees', released their debut EP titled 'Milkshake' in 2013 with indie label 'Rattlepop'. The six track EP drew fairly positive reviews with 'NME' sounding out the band as 'ones to watch' and the band's single 'Gold' also made an appearance on Channel 4's long running TV show 'Hollyoaks'. Success followed shortly after with Jaws, independently releasing their first full album release in 2014 titled, 'Be Slowly' with the help of producer 'Dreamtrak', (who previously worked with Hot Chip, Foals and Swim Deep) the band also embarked on a UK multi date tour, from the quiet, sleepy town of 'Gosport' in Hampshire, to the giant, titanic city of 'Glasgow' in Scotland. The band have gone on to work in the studio and support Birmingham's high-fliers, 'The Twang' in recent years and have also released their second studio album titled, 'Simplicity' in 2016.
Track Review
Jaws-Just A Boy.
The opening track to the album makes you believe that Jaws have continued where they left off with previous records; 'Be Slowly' and debut EP 'Milkshake'. A dreamy, summer infused intro that the band have built the majority of their songs on from the very beginning . Suddenly, out of nowhere, a welcomed heavier sound that sounds completely natural rather than a contrast to what we are used to. Lead singer Connor Schofield snarls the punchy words, "I'm just a boy, but I'll be a better man", which is fitting to the band's new and improved matured sound. In a recent interview with 'Clash' magazine, Connor confessed that he is elated with his vocal performance on this record and that he is now more confident going forward with the band and on first listen the vocals will blow you away. With the rest of the album impressing and giving yet more evidence that the band have progressed from their early, softer material and another UK tour on the horizon, Jaws have laid down the groundwork to propel themselves into the limelight and potentially the next band to breakthrough.
