Sorry for the long period between illustrations but I suddenly got overwhelmed with uni work. But I finally finished my fourth piece. 

Orangutans are my favourite primate, and I’m very happy with how this piece turned out. Their name actually means  "man of the forest", in Malay, and they truly are remarkable. There are two species of orangutan, Bornean and Sumatran, both mainly found in small regions in Indonesia and Malaysia. 

Main reasons the orangutan are critically endangered are:

- deforestation and habitat loss

- unsustainable palm oil agriculture 

- illegal wildlife trade (includes hunting and pet trade)

Conservation Illustration 03 Saola

 The Saola (pronounced: sow-la) is a critically endangered and has only been sighted in forests around the Annamite Mountains of Vietnam and Laos.

It’s also known as the Asian unicorn, and the name fits. 

Honestly I didn’t know anything about a saola before I did some research, and there isn’t much because the saola was only discovered around two decades ago and difficult to find in the wild (documented only four times in the wild). So far there isn’t a known population, but it is estimated only a few hundred may be left. 

The only one that was in captivity died after several days. 

Main threats to the saola, habitat loss and hunting (they can get caught in snares and illegal wildlife trade).

If you are able to, you can donate to The Saola Working Group whom, to my knowledge, are the primary conservation organisation for these rare animals.

Hey all, 

I’m starting a new project I’m calling Conservation Illustration. 

Every month I’m going to do at least one illustration of an endangered, at risk or vulnerable animal and attach links to various organisations that promote their conservation. 

I’m attaching these links so people who can, and only if you can, donate to the organisations to help support their conservation efforts. 

I will be accepting suggestions for animals and if there are any specific organisations I should add let me know.
