have you heard of the saola? i just learned about it from a book of poetry im reading (Primordial by Mai Der Vang) and i love it. (also highly reccomend that poetry collection)

"Saola"

Saola, also known as the Asian unicorn, is a critically endangered species first discovered in 1992 in Vietnam. They are found only in the Annamite Mountains of Laos and Vietnam. Due to their notoriously elusive nature, it's extremely difficult to spot them in the wild in person. Even though a few had been captured in the past for breeding programs, none survived after a few months in captivity. Currently, there is still no Saola in captivity.

I only knew about this creature about 6 years ago when doing a presentation on my country's endangered animals and it's kinda depressing that an animal discovered not too long ago is already on the brink of extinction. I figured I should draw it to raise awareness and also to immortalize it in my art :>

bovids we haven’t seen in a little while (tora hartebeest, saola, and kouprey)

note that the tora hartebeest reference is a reconstruction by José R Castelló in his book Bovids Of The World . there’s no real photos of a living specimen anywhere ! 🤷

We haven’t had a confirmed sighting of tora hartebeest in roughly 2 decades, the last saola photo was taken in 2013 (but William Robichaud has stated that locals in its range still see it), and the last confirmed kouprey sighting was in 1969 . All three are labelled as critically endangered

Saola

I need to see more appreciation for saola's they're so lovely. They're the only one in their genus, they're also one of the rarest animals in the world as they're critically endangered. Their range is so small it is baffling. Go look up a map of their range and be surprised by how little space they cover naturally.

ALSO, they were first reported in 1992, that's only 31 years ago. With the first photograph of them coming a year later of a captive specimen. Genuinely, they're just so dear.
