Happy World Rhino Day! 🦏 Another Mom and baby white rhino we spotted in Lake Nakuru. We sat and watched as the baby nursed and wandered around. Happy World Rhino Day! 🦏 When we first arrived at Lake Nakuru National Park, we were lucky enough to spot both White and Black Rhinos within minutes. I couldn't believe it! Here are a couple shots of the Black Rhino. They are not that great since they were far away, but I'm still happy I was able to get a shot of these beautiful creatures! 🦏 Lake Nakuru is currently home to the largest number of rhinos in Kenya, with 80% being white rhinos and 20% being black rhinos. "The number of black rhinos in Kenya plummeted from about 20,000 in 1970 to fewer than 280 individuals in the 1980s because of indiscriminate poaching. The remaining populations of rhinos were at risk of survival because they were too few and spread out to breed successfully." - @savetherhinointernational The rhino sanctuary was established in 1984 when the first two rhinos were introduced to the lake Nakuru National Park grounds. "Lake Nakuru National Park was chosen as the first Rhino sanctuary because it was already a bird sanctuary and it had the needed land for the rhinos to be relocated at the time.
