A Rat for Every Person

The tale of how a rat of rather higher than average intelligence and rather lower than average desire for survival had gotten mixed into all this was a long and rather painful one that was proving not to be much less painful now.

It seemed that it was a rule of this city that each of its denezins be given a rat as a companion- no one was to feel lonely living in this town. Normally this worked wonderfully- people treated their rats as genuine companions, and the rats in turn gave their partners affection, and occasionally performed small favours. All of these rats seemed smarter than others of their species, but this one in particular happend to, in fact, not be a rat at all.

Peter Pettigrew, presumed dead, had been assigned to one Percy Weasley when the third-eldest child of such a large family had taken up residence in the strange town as part of a program he was in for a career outside of school. And Percy did not like his rat companion one bit. He seemed to believe it was the biggest load of poppycock he'd ever encountered. He left poor Peter to fend for himself, at first leaving him on the streed, and then, after well-meaning neighbours continually returned the rat with small warnings that he should be more careful about his companion, had locked him inside his flat, though he'd first made sure that any and all food was sealed away, not wanting the vermin to get to it.

So it really was a blessing when the boy's family visited and the youngest son happened upon the furry creature, and offered the starving, lethargic thing a bit of his own meal. Such a blessing, that the rat momentarily forgot its misery and, once it had cleaned up every crumb offered, clambered its way into the young boy's lap and took the first warm, comfortable nap it had known in years. It had spent the rest of the family's stay curled up either with Ronald, or in his belongings, and it was by this very stroke of luck that he happened to be inside Ron's bag when the family left, and he didn't wake up until he was unpacked. He squeaked in surprise at suddnely finding himself in unfamiliar surroundings, very un-rat-ish memories flooding in for a moment before he skittered to the safety of Ron's shoes, clambering up his pant leg to try and get to his hands for the attention he'd grown to expect from the kind boy.

The astronomy tower was one of Padma’s many places she went to when she wanted to be alone. While she wasn’t an avid quidditch player, or a flyer, she’d never been afraid of heights. (The tower was also a good place to write, and sing her heart out, without anyone bothering her or yelling at her ‘cause she was making too much noise or anything like that.) So imagine her surprise when she finds Ron Weasley up here as well.
