So here’s the deal. Presidents are allowed to whine. They’re allowed to complain about the press, late-night comics, or the neighbor’s dog if they feel like it. That’s the “bully pulpit.” Annoying, but legal.
What they’re not allowed to do is weaponize the government to silence critics. That’s coercion. That’s the constitutional line. The Supreme Court has been very clear: persuasion = okay, threats = nope.
Trump’s problem? He allegedly pressured ABC to shut Jimmy Kimmel up. And if that pressure involved even a hint of regulatory or political threat, then we’re not talking about whining anymore—we’re talking about a sitting president trying to use state power to silence a comedian.
The irony couldn’t be sharper: the man who built his entire brand on “cancel culture is tyranny” may have literally tried to cancel a late-night host. A First Amendment violation over monologue jokes.
So when you hear MAGA folks moaning about free speech, remember—sometimes they don’t want free speech. They just want the freedom to shut you up.
