So I am at our framer to condition the gorgeous paintings of Firelei Báez for our upcoming exhibition. I encounter these Haitian Vodou flags that has just been framed, those of loas Baron Samedi (the hedonist #dandy loa of the dead AND the resurrection) and Grand Bois (represents the rich earth that you spring from and the dark woods you stumble through) After conditioning the paintings and as I prepare to leave, I see a photo of my ancestor, Louis Armstrong. I needed two particular persons yesterday. Those who weren't near but ever so dear. I went to the "rock," "the source," to what's most important, to what supported me, to what affirmed me, to what knew me and all that I am, to what impassioned me, to what crowned me, to what loved me, where there was beauty and certainty...
